Bignor Roman Villa is a large Roman courtyard villa which has been excavated and put on public display on the Bignor estate in the English county of West Sussex. It is well known for its high quality mosaic floors, which are some of the most complete and intricate in the country

You need a car to visit this but it is absolutely worth the trip for history geeks. World class mosaics left in situ in this Roman villa set amongst the south downs. Kids (or enthusiastic adults) can play dress up and with few hands on games.

Lovely location at the foot of the Downs at Bignor. Great for a picnic or a cream tea served from the villa. Look at their website for local attraction days.

Bignor Roman Villa is a great place to learn some interesting history in a beautiful setting, which includes the farm belonging to the family who are descended from the farmer who originally found the remains. For curious minded and scholastically encouraged kids, you can't beat a bit of villa! Budding history buffs can find out about 2 academically different periods of time as the mosaics are covered by Georgian buildings, which have recently been renovated. It's a great chance to see how large such villas used to be, how they were laid out and the beautiful mosaic designs they used. Kids can also to learn about the discovery of this site and why the buildings which cover it are unique in their own right… spoilers! You can also walk from Bignor Hill to Gumber farm and see several thousand sheep and lambs, plus a variety of rare wildlife such as fallow and roe deer and sometimes a Barn Owl. Because you've got the contented and well loved live exhibits to visit, this really is suitable for all ages, and easily either an educational or whimsical jaunt. Check online for the exciting family events that are held throughout the year such as reenactments.
