Right now the road - this scenic river offers a beach, swimming and picnic area. Keep an eye out for the wild horses!

I highly recommend taking a drive down to the Verde River if you have are driving a truck or SUV. Needle Rock Recreation site is our favorite local spot. Beautiful photo opportunities, swimming, fishing, picnics. If using GPS on your phone, it might take you to the picnic site which is okay (has picnic tables, restrooms, but is not as close to the river), but the best spot is more rugged. Just stay on Service Road 20 until it turns to gravel and stay right to the large parking area near the river (you will see a pin on Google Maps for Verde River Rec Site). Weekdays are less crowded- weekends in the summer can get too congested. If adventurous and driving an SUV or Truck with decent ground clearance, you can try taking Dixileta Dr to Service Road 20. Just turn right out of our driveway and stay on the dirt road until you pass through the gate as you enter Tonto National Forest. Stay on road (very bumpy, large ruts, especially after storms) until you reach a very steep decline to the left which brings you to Service Road 20. Turn left and stay on road until you end up in the large gravel parking area on the righ, next to the river (about ¼ mile).
