Portsmouth has been home to Africans and African Americans for more than 350 years. New Hampshire has an African heritage that dates back almost to the arrival of Europeans. Much of that history, begun in 1645, centers on the state’s only port at Portsmouth. As many as 700 Blacks were here by the Revolution, many were caught up in an active Northern slave market while others were part of a little-known free society. The African Burial Ground Memorial marks the only known African burial site in New England. Guided and self-guided tours are available, see the website for more information.

The Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail, now under the umbrella of the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, was founded in 1995 to preserve, celebrate and honor the history and culture of the African-American community in Portsmouth and the New Hampshire region. With distinctive bronze plaques that identify the community from its colonial-era African Burying Ground to the modern Civil Rights Movement, the Trail is proud to serve as a model across the country on what it means to raise public awareness and appreciation for a region not known for its Black history.
