Check out an old Spanish mission in the heart of a private, Jesuit-run university. Feel free to stroll through the rose gardens afterwards.
Although this is not the original site of the mission built by the Spanish in 1777, it is still connected to the history of colonization of California. When there is not a mass going on you can do a self guided tour of the building and the grounds.
The University, founded in 1851, was born amid the tumultuous growth of the Gold Rush era. The mission, dating back to 1777, was the first outpost of Spanish civilization in the Santa Clara Valley.
Spanish mission founded by the Franciscan order in the present-day city of Santa Clara, California. The mission, the eighth in CA, was founded on January 12, 1777 and named for Saint Clare of Assisi
