Tintern Abbey was founded on 9 May 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It is situated adjacent to the village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, which at this location forms the border between Monmouthshire in Wales and Gloucestershire in England.
The Cistercian abbey of Tintern is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales. Keen walkers can walk directly from the cottage to Tintern taking in Devils Pulpit on the way.
The village of Tintern is the stunning home to a world famous Cistercian abbey and an ancient industrial heritage. Sitting quietly in the Wye Valley, on the edge of The River Wye, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is a wonderful place to visit. Near to bars and restaurants.
