Take a self-guided walk amongst the tunnels, batteries and army barracks built on the headland to protect Auckland from feared Russian invasions with while enjoying a breath-taking view back at the city. A short documentary film plays on a loop between 8.30am and 4pm.

Maungauika is a volcano forming a headland called North Hea in the suburb of Devonport. It has sweeping views over the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, since 1885 the head was mainly used by the military as a coastal defence installation, which left a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy, forming part of the attraction. Take a Torch! Can be accessed by car or by walking.
