A BIT OF HISTORY
Built in the 19th Century, Newhaven Fort is the largest work of defence ever built in Sussex and is the last of a long series of coastal defences built on the cliffs overlooking Seaford Bay, dating back to the Iron Age.
Back then, the River Ouse flowed into the sea at Seaford, but over the years the river silted up and in 1539 a new cut was made for the river to come out at the fishing village of Meeching. This quickly became known as the ‘New Haven’ giving the town and subsequently the Fort the name we know today.
Newhaven Fort was one of 72 coastal forts to be commissioned by the British Government under Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, following the apparently threatening behaviour of Napoleon the Third, who was busy building his navy and strengthening his own coastal defences.
Designed by 22-year-old Lieutenant John Charles Ardagh of the Royal Engineers, construction of Newhaven Fort began in 1862 and took ten years and 6 million bricks to complete. The total cost of the 72 coastal forts is thought to have been around £12,000,000.

Lewes also claims host to numerous contemporary art galleries and historic & special interest sites including the once mighty Priory of St. Pancras - a casualty of the dissolution of the monasteries.
Lewes is a market town of small, specialist, independent retailers and on certain days, the subtle aromas wafting from Harvey’s Brewery will attract any visitor to Cliffe High Street. Bookshops, boutiques and antique centres sit alongside individual craft workshops, and the restaurants, cafes, and pubs offer delicious choices all year round with real emphasis on local produce.

Whether you fancy taking in a West End show at an Eastbourne theatre or concert at Eastbourne’s fabulous bandstand, enjoying a stroll on the iconic Victorian pier, jogging on the beach, swimming in the sea, rollerskating along the promenade and seafront or even having a go at some water sports, Eastbourne can offer it all.
Eastbourne town centre boasts a large selection of shops for food and drink, theatres, art galleries, bars, clubs and restaurants. It’s also a family friendly resort – to keep the kids entertained, the Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway and Treasure Island offer plenty of entertainment, including rides, adventure golf and indoor soft play area, and there are bags of further attractions to visit within the surrounding region around Eastbourne.
