A cosy pub with a lovely dining room attached - they provide fantastic food in a lovely warm atmosphere. The place gets very busy on Friday and Saturday nights so you might have a little bit of a wait for a table, but I've usually found it's worth it.

This street food market runs from Monday-Friday at lunchtime. The end of the pedestrianised street is packed with stalls selling everything from risotto to jollof rice - it's a fantastic place for a lunchtime stop, followed by a wander through the boutiques, bakeries and bookshops that you find lining the rest of the street. If you return in the evening you'll find the whole street lit up with fairy lights strung between the houses, which give it quite a magical atmosphere.

This is a fantastic restaurant, specialising in Spanish moorish food. It's a little pricey so it's one for a special night out, but it never disappoints. It has an excellent reputation in London - see the website for advance booking: http://www.moro.co.uk/

The restaurant is named for its iconic owner - the chef Yotam Ottolenghi, who has a recipe column in a national newspaper here and is very much associated with North London. We've had guests come to stay with us just to visit Ottolenghi's restaurant before - his reputation is pretty impressive! If you want to get a sense of Islington and the people who live here, this is the place to go - cosmopolitan and high-quality. This restaurant is the most affordable of Ottolenghi's different restaurants - for dinner a main dish is about £19-£22.

Kipferl is an Austrian cafe serving delicious coffee, hot chocolate and cakes. It's a great place for an afternoon pit-stop. They also do a very nice brunch for a lazy morning.

This is a great way to live London like a local - Broadway market is filled with food stalls and vintage clothes boutiques, and it also contains an excellent pizza place (Franco Manca) which is a brilliant for lunch or dinner. The walk along the canal to Broadway market from our flat takes about half an hour - perfect for working up an appetite while enjoying the beautiful canal. A great pub that does pretty good snack and food. A little more expensive than the nearby Charles Lamb but bigger and usually a tiny bit less crowded as a result.

Shopping

On Saturday mornings you'll find a wonderful antique market in Camden Passage. The passage itself is beautiful - lined with clothes and homeware boutiques, antique shops, vintage clothes shops, perfumeries and cafes. On Saturdays lots of stalls bring out an exciting mixture of antiques - everything from jewellery to mirrors, from prints and posters to beautiful copper pots. It's a wonderful place to get a flavour of the local culture and history in stylish settings, and go beyond the usual tourist spots and enjoy London like a local.

This is my number one recommendation for a Sunday morning: visit the flower market at Columbia Road. It runs from about 8.30am-2pm, but it's better to get there no later than 10am, as it gets very busy and crowded after that! The street is bursting with flower stalls, musicians playing to the crowd, boutique shops, and cafes where you can settle in for a nice brunch after wandering around the market. To get to the market I recommend walking along the canal from our flat, which is beautiful in the morning light - turn off the canal at Queensbridge road and head south to get to the market.

Brick Lane is known for its brilliant restaurants, vibrant streets and particularly for the street art that you'll find in this part of London. You'll find lots of work by Banksy - the famous street artist - around there. South Bank is a wonderful place in the evening and at night, when both banks of the river are lit with up with lights, and the whole place is bustling. You'll find the National Theatre ( here and The Globe theatre, (a recreation of what theatres were like in Shakespeare's time) - both are excellent places to experience London's historic theatre culture. The British Film Institute's (BFI) cinema is also here with a great bar - a wonderful place to dip into for a film. Opposite the BFI there is a famous collection of bookstalls, where you can while away half an hour or so browsing through the books. There are plenty of restaurants and food stalls, and behind the Southbank Centre you'll find a food market running every afternoon. The Southbank Centre itself has endless cultural events. During the Christmas period you can also enjoy the winter market, with festive food and special crafts on offer. Arts & Culture

Enter the house and step back in time to 18th century London, where you can follow the lives of a family of Huguenot (French protestant) immigrant silk-weavers from 1724 until the early 20th century. It's a wonderful way to get a sense of London's history, and to see something different than the usual tourist spots.
