Food Scene

Walking distance from the house, excellent Tex-Mex and interior Mexican food. The margaritas alone are worth the walk.

Ranch-inspired farm-to-table restaurant and bar with mostly outdoor/open air seating. Very chill spot where you'll want to linger. The menu is terrific -- mostly small plates -- and the drinks are even better.

Austin loves Torchy's. Creative, delicious tacos, plus a great outdoor bar and big patio. Next to the H-E-B grocery.

Rainey Street is the city's newest bar/restaurant district, which I like a lot more than Sixth Street. Lots of great little bars in these converted houses from the 1920s-40s.

My favorite East Side bar, located in a restored old building. Great drinks, lots of outdoor seating, and a tiny mezcal bar upstairs. A very Austin bar.

Austin's iconic city swimming hole, a natural spring-fed pool that's always 68 degrees, with grassy hillsides and shade trees around it. Great for swimming and laying out on a hot day.

Austin's biggest, best hiking trail, which follows Barton Creek. Lots of hidden cliffs, swimming holes, and even a waterfall. Rugged terrain but not difficult hiking. More challenging to mountain bike it.

Sightseeing

Austin's original scenic hill, with views of the entire city and Lake Austin below. You can park at the base of the steps, be prepared to climb a lot of steps to get there. The view is worth it.

Essentials

The newest grocery store in the area, with a big wine/beer section, bakery, and a surprisingly good cafe serving good food, beer and wine. The HEB on Manor Road is closer but very limited selection.
