Sightseeing

Strolling 35 feet above the busy streets of New York City through Chelsea, Hells Kitchen, and Times Square is an amazing way to spend an afternoon. The High Line is an excellent example of design and architecture being used in a creative way to add value and beauty to New York City neighborhoods, without disrupting the flow of urban life. The pedestrian walkway is stunning on its own merits, but also quite impressive because of the design challenges it had to overcome, simply to be built.

Drinks & Nightlife

Where to go get drinks around the neighborhood.
My wife and I go here on date nights. It's a totally chill ~30 seat room that serves great food and drinks and features live music after 9pm. And because of its size, every seat in the house gets a great view of the band (if you're there for the music). Remember to tip the musicians!

Food Scene

The food is delicious and unpretentious, the beer selection is great, and they had the foresight to start growing their own produce on a roof garden years before it became corny to do so. If you want to sample great pizza in New York, please don't go to Grimaldi's or Lombardi's. Do yourself a favor and come here to Roberta's in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Let me just say this: the "Booker T." is a hamburger served with a piece of cayenne-infused fried chicken on top, garnished with a sweet pickle and a grilled tomato, and served with fries. Peaches is the best place for a brunch burger, a quick snack, a beer, people-watching, or just an evening of getting hammered. I am grateful that this place is 3 blocks from my house.

The pizza is outstanding, and the wine list is well-priced. This is a great neighborhood place, suitable for parents with young kids, couples on a date, business partners at a working lunch, or even solo people wanting to read a newspaper over a coffee or glass of wine. The back yard is also quite lovely. Don't expect 4-star service. The whole restaurant is very laid back, and everyone seems to be on Italian-people-time.

Japanese tacos and grownup drinks. This place is great for inexpensive eats, and great people watching on a beautiful block of Tompkins.

My family and I have been frequenting Saraghina since 2012. It's a super cute Italian restaurant with great sandwiches and pizza (one of the best in Brooklyn, 5 min. from the apartment). Early in the day, they are super child friendly. Bonus... they also have an incredible bakery.

Inexpensive eats that are stick-to-your-ribs good. Most of the items here are congee-based with some savory add-ons (kimchi, pork belly, etc.) My sister and I grew up calling this "soggy rice" in a bowl — which is WHAT IT IS. End of story.

Parks & Nature

The 2nd largest park in New York City, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted - who also designed Central Park. I run here very frequently, and the park is an amazing getaway for familes, couples, single people, and athletes. You can play a game of soccer, ultimate frisbee, run a 3.3 mile loop, go ice-skating, horse-back riding, or just have a picnic. There are also public bbq pits, and multiple playgrounds, each individually tailored to children of different age groups. The band shell is also a premier venue for live music in the summer. I once saw Cat Power perform (for free).

Coffee

The absolute best place in the neighborhood for coffee. They use only La Colombe beans so the coffee is 👍🏽. Plus, it's reasonably priced!
