Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen is a must for all visitors to the city, young and old. Tivoli is located just a few minutes walk from City Hall, and with the Copenhagen Central Station as its nearest neighbour it is very easy to get to.
Tivoli Gardens was founded in 1843 and has become a national treasure and an international attraction. Fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen visited many times, as did Walt Disney and many other celebrities, who all fell in love with the gardens. Part of Tivoli Gardens' secret is that there is something for everyone. The scenery is beautiful with exotic architecture, historic buildings and lush gardens. At night, thousands of coloured lights create a fairy tale atmosphere that is completely unique.

At the main entrance, visitors are officially received by Frederik VI, a former king much beloved by his people, so one is fully aware of entering his garden. In the waters of the beautiful garden he used to be rowed about on the canals saluting the people. The statue's pedestal has the following inscription: 'Here he felt happy in the midst of loyal people'.
Today, Svendsen's Boat Service (Svendsens Bådfart) will do the rowing for you. Boat tours operate all summer. The boat tour will give you a good idea of the vastness of the gardens. On the tour you will see the Frederiksberg Palace, towering on a hill top, many lovely little bridges, and the Chinese Pavilion that was erected in 1799 as a Royal teahouse.

The autonomous Free Town Christiania was founded in 1971 on the site of an abandoned military camp and has continued its existence for over four decades, lending Copenhagen its reputation as a liberal, free-thinking capital. The Danish state, that has always owned and tolerated Christiania, has recently opted to rethink its relationship with the Free Town and in 2011 an agreement was reached whereby residents would be able to buy back the area from the state – thus ending four decades as an officially-tolerated squat.

Canals + Nyhavn:
The image of pretty painted houses perched on the canalside is the archetypal Copenhagen scene. The city is ringed by canals, which is maybe why so many people mistakenly assume it is in Holland. Most popular are: Nyhavn.

Today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and classyrestaurants dominate the old port. Nyhavn is filled with people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music and great food.
No. 9, Nyhavn, is the oldest house in the area dating back to 1681. The design of the house has not been altered since that time. Many of the houses lining the quays of Nyhavn have been the homes of prominent artists.
