Gordon Ramsey's pub-restaurant. The restaurant here doesn't get great reviews (it's good, but not good enough for the price). But the takeaway pizzas are great - 2 for £15, with a touch of Michelin class.

Despite the forbidding exterior, this Japanese restaurant is good value and the real deal. The clientèle will persuade you that this is authentic Japanese food - it's really good for a local place.

A Japanese take on Mediterranean tapas, served in a Camden basement... you probably just need to try it. Small dishes, confusingly mixed-up cuisine, deliberately undescriptive menu. But try the squid and ooba leaf spaghetti and you'll understand

My favourite local place. Great neighbourhood tapas with a garden for summer (if you book). Fast service. They do all sorts of Spanish dishes, but are a great choice for vegetarians.

Huge choice of fantastic food stalls and always buzzing. In fact, you struggle to push your way through on a busy summer weekend. But it is the best place for lunch when it's dry. There's plenty to taste before you bu, and you can graze from Korean appetisers to Argentinian main, to Dutch waffles for dessert. Open every day 10am-6pm

Perfect for breakfast, brunch and good coffee. Watch the street from the large window, or settle in downstairs in one of the leather armchairs. The food is simple, fresh and healthy -- except for the pastries and croissants, which are crispy, buttery and indulgent.

Essentials

Huge supermarket. Worth getting the bus here and stocking up if you're staying for any length of time -- it's cheaper than the small supermarkets (except for Lidl) and has the full range of goods you'd expect.

Discount supermarket is good for unbranded essentials and is fantastic for beer and wine. Much cheaper than Sainsburys if you can bear waiting in a long line at the checkout.

This is a real Portuguese deli - you get the best custard tarts, great Douro wines and friendly service, especially if you get into a discussion about the merits of Portuguese wine regions. Good for general foods, newspapers, snacks. Open until 8pm weekdays and Saturday (I think).

Drinks & Nightlife

In winter this is a local's pub serving good gastropub staples, and giving a far more local view of Camden than anywhere on the High Street. But come summer, the beer garden draws people from miles around. On a sunny evening it gets packed. There's also an outdoor BBQ in summer, but this is much less reliable than the bar menu.

Entertainment & Activities

This pioneering zoo is a great day out for families - stars of the place are the tigers, gorillas and penguins, but just as much fun are the Reptile House and B.U.G.S. exhibit.

Parks & Nature

Open from 5am every day (although it closes for sunset throughout the year), the park is a day out in itself at any time of the year. In spring, the Avenue Gardens bloom into formal glory; in summer, there's the Open Air Theatre - one of the most atmospheric places in London to watch theatre; autumn is great for nature - the leaves change colour and the wildfowl are super-easy to spot; winter is when Londoners get the park to themselves for sport, and when the zoo is at its emptiest.

Arts & Culture

The permanent collection here is fantastic -- there's a Gutenberg bible, a Magna Carta and a load of handwritten Beatles lyrics among many many other important books on display. There are original manuscripts, books and scribbles from across the ages giving a fascinating view of recent human history as seen through the written word. It's free, there's a nice cafe next door, and it's open 7 days a week.

Fans of Sherlock (the BBC version starring Benedict Cumberbatch) will recognise North Gower Street -- it stands in for Baker St in the show. Sherlock lives above Speedys, so why not pop in for a sandwich - you never know who you might see.
