Or if you're feeling really fit - drag yourself up Collins Street to the Paris end, to wish on the designer stores.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hands-down the best Espresso Martini - ever - anywhere. I promise. This is one of Melbourne's original, iconic laneway bars; still going strong after 18 years. Small, funky, arty hangout for east-end types; very popular with locals but great for solo visitors, who can sit at the bar and chat, or retire to a corner as the mood takes them. Great music, always something fabulous being mixed by the staff and the occasional guest DJ. Has order-in food available from a number of local restaurants, and an extensive but not pricy drinks list featuring exotic beers, well-chosen wine and a few cocktails. Small smoking area and footpath seating.

Probably the the most popular whisky bar -which means it is sometimes too crowded for comfort. Also has a great array of micro brewed beers, (i think) cider and a good wine list. Go for the whisky cocktails, stay for the excellent snacks and more substantial dishes. Also has outdoor seating.

Melbourne now officially has every cuisine known to man - this central Asian cafe is open every day and is usually crowded. They make their own special noodles that are halfway between Udon and Spatzle in texture and simply fabulous. Lamb is a specialty, but there are plenty of beef and chicken options. Loads of chilli, kebabs galore - it's one of my favourites. Has an online menu and does takeaway orders over the phone.
