Yum Cha! There's lots of Yum Cha joints in the city but if you're feeling a bit rusty from the night before then you might want to stay closer to home to get your dumpling and Tsing Tao remedy. Train to Marrickville from St Peters is fast and easy, or alternatively an Uber will get you there for not much more than $10.

This place has all the good things and it is our hands down favorite joint around. Open 11am-late. Great selection of cheese, charcuterie, classic bistro dishes, & tinned seafood from the Mediterranean. They also tin all their own amazing Aus seafood on a 1930s hand canning press (ask to see it, staff will be happy to show you, its pretty cool). They even do tinned cocktails (Mar-Tin-i, Can-Hattan, Cosmopoli-Tin). But its not all gimmick, its the genuine real deal. It won Time Out bar of the year and if you go on a Sunday lunch the joint will be full of Sydney's top chefs stuffing their pie holes. Great wine, great food, great atmosphere. A real local gem. Sit downstairs at the bar.

Home of the infamous Watermelon Cake, this place is an Instagram dream. On weekends there is often a cue of food bloggers waiting to have their slice of cake and photograph it too. But there's more to this place than the watermelon cake. Don't get me wrong, the cakes are superb, but the sausage rolls! They're the real deal. Great coffee. TIP: take your stash of baked goods and eat them in the park just down the road (Camperdown Memorial Park).

Chef Luke Powell is a former Tetsuya's fine dinning superstar. He has bought all his refined skills from his time at Tets to his own shop in the back streets of Chippo, but he's also bought his relaxed nature. This place is fun! You will leave full and probably drunk too. Famous for the smoked meats done European style rather than American. Vegetarians and pescatarians will leave just as happy as the carnivores. Awesome fit out in an old garage. Think polished concrete floor, high ceilings, long bar, big share tables, and a bit of rock and roll.

There are lots of local breweries in the area but this is the original and the best (in my opinion). Its about a ten minute walk from home, dogs are welcome, so are kids, the beer is tasty and cheap, and the staff are really friendly. A great place to meet locals. Its got the classic Newtown grungy vibe. Great place for a few arvo frothies to kick off your evening or wind down after a day out and about. KEEP IN MIND this not a night time venue, they are a brewery with a tasting menu only so last drinks are 6.30pm and the roller door shuts at 7pm.

The burgers at Mary's are famous, but this is no restaurant. Its definitely a bar, a loud, dirty bar full of Slayer tattoos. Its probably one of the coolest joints in town so expect a line up if its a weekend. They are also open in the day times from Friday over the weekend. Don't plan on leaving this place sober. Definitely get a burger. Its owned and run by a really well respected chef, the grub's good, the wine list is very classy for what appears to be a real dive. A beautiful beach off the beaten tourist track. Grab a sandwich from Pilu or dine in at the restaurant which is one of Sydney's finest (but pricey). Its a bit hard to get to which is probably why its off the track, but worth it. A ferry to Manly then an Uber from there will do it and the ferry ride's a nice trip. Behind the church is the most amazing and beautiful old cemetery. Elizabeth Parker, the woman who Charles Dickens based his character Miss Havisham on in Great Expectations is buried there with her father. The cemetery is walled off from the rest of Camperdown Memorial Park by beautiful sand stone walls (although being Newtown they are covered in graf). The entire park was once all cemetery and the grave stones lining the walls are the ones that used to cover the rest of the area. With its beautiful old trees, grassy lawns and wild flowers growing everywhere its great place for a picnic (although expect dogs to be there as its also an off leash dog park, all the dogs are cute and friendly).
