Claire is where Studio 80 was first, in the heart of city centre. The club was taken over by the same men of Disco Dolly, so that sets the expectations high. Besides, Claire has a license until 08 am so the party continues throughout the weekend ;-)

In all of our year list we mostly talk about the upper floors of the new A’dam Toren, but also the basement floor deserves to be in the spotlight. This is where you find Shelter, the only true underground club of the city. King of the underground San Proper is resident, so need we say more?

Arts & Culture

Opened as a town hall in 1655, this building became a palace in the 19th century. The interiors gleam, especially the marble work – at its best in a floor inlaid with maps of the world in the great burgerzaal (citizens’ hall), which occupies the heart of the building. Pick up a free audio tour at the desk after you enter; it will explain everything you see in vivid detail. King Willem-Alexander uses the palace only for ceremonies

The Anne Frank Huis draws almost one million visitors annually (prepurchase tickets online to minimise the queues). With its reconstruction of Anne’s melancholy bedroom and her actual diary – sitting alone in its glass case, filled with sunnily optimistic writing tempered by quiet despair – it’s a powerful experience. The focus of the museum is the achterhuis (rear house), also known as the Secret Annexe, a dark and airless space where the Franks and others observed complete silence during the daytime, outgrew their clothes, pasted photos of Hollywood stars on the walls and read Dickens, before being mysteriously betrayed and sent to their deaths.

Sightseeing

Prostitution is actually legal in many parts of Europe, but nowhere in the world is prostitution a major tourist attraction like it is here. Prostitution in Amsterdam is a curiosity for some, and one of the reasons to visit for others. The Red Light District is exactly what you probably think it is, but it’s also mostly safe and clean and should be a stop on almost every visitor’s itinerary. It’s hard to avoid, actually, being so close to the train station and in the city’s oldest and most historic neighborhood.
