Merci is an incredible multi-level store in the Marais with an eclectic selection of fashion, home decor, cosmetics, stationery, and jewelry from premium brands like Alexander Wang, Maison Olga, and Zoe Karssen. But if you’re going to splurge, do it on their off-tone color, wrinkled linen sheets, which start at €300 for a duvet cover. The store used to be a wallpaper factory, which explains its rugged and industrial atmosphere, with lots of light coming through the glass ceiling.

Not only does this store offer great people watching—a man trying to please a woman, a woman splurging after her first paycheck—but this is where you come for a square silk carré scarf. You may spend €350, but you can use it as a belt, around your neck, or tied to your purse—it is an eternal luxury item that never goes out of style. After more than 150 years on the Right Bank, Hermès crossed the Seine to open this museum-quality store in the former pool of the Lutetia Hotel. It was remodeled to be both modern and warm, with gigantic wooden huts and surprising wavy stairs.

Down a passage off busy rue des Archives in the Marais, this loft-like store includes an art gallery, a bookstore, a café, and a curated selection of menswear, accessories, and gadgets. They are the only store in Paris to carry Shinola Detroit watches, which even at €500 are an edgier, more affordable alternative to a classic Rolex or Cartier. Even Obama has one! Even though most of the clothes and accessories are aimed at men, women can rock them, too—especially in Paris, where the style is to wear oversize sweaters and chunky jewelry. I love my Shinola watch!

Near the Champs-Élysées, this is a great one-stop shop for high-end international designers like Chloé, Givenchy, Balmain, Carven, and Lanvin. With two floors and 4,000 square feet of space, the selection can be daunting, so go straight for the jewelry! Aaron Jah Stone offers gypsy luxurious necklaces and bracelets starting at €700. Despite the high-end nature of this store, the salesclerks are friendly to both browsers and serious shoppers, so don’t feel conscious about coming in if you don’t intend to buy.

This store is a real experience! You have a large array of niche perfumes...and then 147 video screens and sliding wooden panels hiding curated clothes from Gucci, Rick Owens, and Saint Laurent. Really, though, this is where I splurge on an “It Bag,” like the latest Fendi “baguette” style that goes under your arm. I find it interesting to mix tableware with fashion, but they do it here by carrying the famous Fornasetti plates and jars adorned with the various visages of opera singer Lina Cavalieri. It’s not that easy to find them—and they are not cheap, either!

Here, I can browse a selection of French designers like Ami and Jerome Dreyfuss while snacking on a croissant from baker Gontran Cherrier, whose pastries are available at the café. They also have a high-end selection of tech items like Maison Kitsuné iPhone cases or Lomo cameras. I’m always happy to drop €300 on a Carven sweater with a fun motif. Originally online only, this flagship store, located in the newly redesigned Forum des Halles, is open seven days a week—a rarity for Paris!

This store was opened by the founders of Veja sneakers, so I come for their super-chic, high-end shoes, or “baskets,” as they are called. Towards the back, along a distressed wall, the display not only includes a big selection of Veja styles in various colors, but other brands, like Soloviere, too. The makers of Veja are environmentally conscious and prefer to promote European brands, so they only stock local labels with a story like Saint James, Repetto, and Michel Vivien.

This ancient candlemaker feels like an apothecary, with candles displayed under large glass domes. At €390, their “Great” size scented candles made of beeswax are a splurge, but you’ll never regret it, and they last a year! Everyone who walks into my living room asks about my Abd El Kader scent, with notes of ginger, jasmine, and smoked tea. Created in 1643, Cire Trudon is the oldest candlemaker in the world and supplied the court of Louis XIV and most of the churches in France with wicks to light.

Paris’s oldest department store showcases the world’s best designers like Dries Van Noten, Proenza Schouler, Lanvin, and many more, but their cosmetics department is unparalleled for those who will spend €34 on a gloss or €95 on a foundation from French brands like By Terry and La Mer. The Rose Bakery Tea Room in the rotunda is perfect for a sweet or savory snack. A tarte with apples, honey, and figs may cost €9, but you’re splurging, remember?
