Entertainment & Activities

The virtual reality experience at the MK2 library is my favorite place to go for a high-tech nap. You can choose from a dozen scenes, from short fiction and documentaries to simulations that let you descend the depths of the ocean or float through space. Just put on a mask and take the ride, and before you know it you’ll be drifting off. The VR room is open until 2 am Wednesday through Saturday, and it’s pretty affordable: 12 euro for 20 minutes or 20 euro for 40 minutes.

Everything Else

Paris’s first floating hotel is the perfect place for a siesta. In summer, you can relax on the terrace sipping a vitamin cocktail or lie in the pool on enormous rafts, lulled by the lapping of the Seine. In winter, find a cozy chair and gaze out the large bay windows at the river. You don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to use the pool and lounge chairs, but do buy a drink or two to blend in—and to make you more sleepy.

By far the most famous pool in Paris, it’s part of the Hotel Molitor, which is designed to look like an ocean liner. I get such pleasure when I swim here. I love doing laps under the open sky then falling asleep on one of the art deco lounge chairs. And there’s so much history here. It’s where the bikini debuted in 1946. The pool is normally guests only, but booking a spa treatment gets you entry. Or come the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 pm, when it’s 75 euro for 90 minutes, and includes champagne.

Parks & Nature

One of the most romantic gardens in all of Paris, set in a leafy courtyard on rue Chaptal. It’s part of an old mansion, now a museum, where writer George Sand and painter Ary Scheffer once lived. Find a bench under one the large centenary trees and let your mind wander. Set in a greenhouse, the museum’s tea café is a very peaceful place and unknown to many Parisians. I like to stop in for a hot cup of tea to calm the mind before heading to the garden. Set in a greenhouse, the museum’s tea café is a very peaceful place, and unknown to many Parisians. It’s one of the best kept secrets of Paris, a green space obscured from the crowded streets of Marais. I discovered it by chance when I walked through a hidden gate and came out to a large rectangle of grass shaded by a few birch trees and several private gardens. Very peaceful, it’s an ideal spot for a mini-nap a world away from the bustle of Marais. It’s easy to miss. Look for the gate located between buildings 8 and 10 on rue des Rosiers. If you’ve passed the boutique Caroll, you’ve gone too far.

This is one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens in the city. It’s unknown by many Parisians because it’s in Boulogne-Billancourt, just outside the city. No matter what time of year you visit, there will be colorful flowers and plants in bloom, and the sounds of waterfalls and birdsong are enough to inspire a Zen state of mind. Take a few minutes to rest on the meticulously maintained grass. Don’t miss the small red bridges that connect the little islets, along with the stone sculptures and shrubs manicured in the Japanese tradition.

Drinks & Nightlife

Finally, a bar dedicated to the art of the siesta. You can choose what you want to nap in: a hammock, a zero gravity chair, or a shiatsu massage bed. Each vary in price, depending on the time, and all are super comfortable. This place is the future! They offer a range of relaxing music to help lull you to sleep, like chimes or waves crashing. Pick the right one and you’ll feel as if you’re in the middle of a Balinese rice paddy or on a private island.

Arts & Culture

The main library of this massive cultural center has a section of cubbies where you can isolate yourself and read. It’s usually very quiet, but if not, there are headphones available to block out the noise. After a good book, it would be appropriate to walk over to the National Museum of Modern Art to view Joan Miró’s 1925 masterpiece La Siesta. Food Scene

When I’m getting ready for a long night out, I like to come here first. It’s a boat docked on the river near Pont Alexandre III that doubles as a bar-restaurant. It’s very laid-back, friendly to people of all ages, and has beautiful views of the Seine. I’ll often settle into one of the cushioned lounge chairs and just gaze at the river. Arrive early to secure one of the big, cushioned chairs. If they’re taken, walk a few steps to the bar, where dozens of deck chairs line the banks of the Seine.
