I love this counter-service place for a quick family breakfast. They serve Equator coffee, by far the best cup in town. Get the avocado toast. It’s olive bread with lots of avocado and two poached eggs on top.

They have awesome seasonal flavors that are always changing. They make them with organic milk and eggs, and they get their fruit and other ingredients from the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. Then there’s a nice, contained patio where you can sit in the middle of the Brentwood Country Mart. Everything’s good. You can get the classic flavors or go for something out there like apple pie.

Kids love a great candy store, and so do I. Here, you can get your sugar high with all the variety in the world. They also have all these great gag gifts to keep you busy, like rubber chickens, kitschy posters, bacon soda—you get the idea. If you need a life-sized cardboard cutout of Ron Burgundy, this is the place to look for it.

Arts & Culture

This is a great museum in Griffith Park where you can take the kids to check out old steam trains, go on a train ride, and explore LA’s past. Travel Town is free—you just pay if you want to ride the train.

Inside this Jewish cultural center, there’s a room-sized wooden Noah’s Ark filled with artistic animal marionettes and sculptures. Kids can load handmade wooden animals onto the Ark and climb through rope tunnels. It’s a perfect fun house, with activities, music, stories, and entertainment. Get your ticket in advance (you don’t need one for a child under 2). Starting at 11:45 on Thursdays, the Ark is free. First-come, first-served.

Activities for kids and amazing art and culture for everyone. They have classes for children and families, and you can learn East Asian brush painting at the Boone Children’s Gallery. Everyone gets in free on Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30, when there are also activities and tours. And if you’re still looking for something to do, the La Brea Tar Pits are right next door.

Entertainment & Activities

This is a little hidden gem—most people who go to the pier don’t even realize it’s there. Kids can touch the starfish and sea urchins and get a deeper understanding of the beauty and fragility of our ecosystem. It’s nothing fancy but is a good 30 minutes of entertainment. Every one of the more than a hundred species of animals and plants on display comes from right here in Santa Monica Bay.

Take in a movie and dinner in one fell swoop. There’s lots of kid-friendly food, the waiters are attentive, and you can have an adult beverage while you lean back in your recliner! It’s worth it to get the premium plus seats—they’re comfy and you get free popcorn.

Parks & Nature

A super simple hike that’s flat and easy for everyone, but it still gives you a cool view. You can see the Hollywood sign from many spots. It’s also fun to look at the Mulholland Dam, which was built in the ’20s and has beautiful arches with all these bear heads on them. There are a lot of trees but it still gets pretty sunny, so wear your sunscreen.
