Drinks & Nightlife

Love this place to get a drink in the neighbourhood and hang with locals. Their G&T's are excellent. Make sure to come before midnight as it gets packed early on Friday and Saturday nights when everyone comes out for a drink and a dance.

Very traditional Dutch 'bruin' bar. It's tradition to order a few Heinekens and then swing the large lamp that hangs over the bar!

This is a fantastic bar that looks out onto the River Ij. In summer it's a popular pit stop for thirsty people on canal boats who like to park their boats and get a drink. At night it plays great music for dancing.

Lovely little gem tucked away in the East of Amsterdam. In winter it holds markets and bonfires and in Summer it has a little 'beach' leading out to the canalside. It often plays fun music to dance and hula hoop too! It's bit out of the way for Amsterdam but it's totally a destination bar where you can spend the whole night dancing!

Parks & Nature

When the weather is nice this is THE place to grab some beers and a blanket and relax in the sun. It's a large park with many secret hideaways and little manicured gardens. The Blauwe Theehouse in the centre of it is nice too.

When you want to be in relatively untamed nature, Amsterdamse Bos is where I would recommend. It's about 30 minutes out of Amsterdam but when you enter the park it's like you've really escaped the city. Ride your bike around the huge park and get back to nature.

Food Scene

Amazing New Zealander/Brazillian cafe with the most delicious brunches! On a weekend morning come very early (opens at 8:30am every morning and I would recommend trying to get there when they open) as there's usually a queue to get a table. Come hungry and try the Navajo Eggs or the Breakfast Rice bowl. So good!

Little Italian Trattoria that people often overlook because it's not super fancy. But the food tastes like it is - there's a large display of beautiful pastas and salads made fresh that day. The coffee is delicious and they also sell Italian foodstuffs to take home.

Arts & Culture

An important museum that pays respects to the plight of Anne Frank and indeed all the Jewish people who were affected by the holocaust. You really do get a feel for what it must have been like living in secret during Nazi-occupied times. Make sure you buy a ticket online first before you go, otherwise you'll be waiting a long time to get in.

Europe's largest flea market! It's only open one weekend a month, so google 'IJ Hallen' to see if it's on while you're visiting. It's a definitely a memorable experience! From Centraal Station you take the free ferry to the NDSM wharf (which in itself is an interesting place to see from an industrial standpoint) and follow the crowds to the market. It's €5 entrance but with the bargains to be had it's worth it. Afterwards have a nice drink at Pllek or Noorderlicht for a beautiful view over the River Ij.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Amsterdam is to do as the locals do and go by 'fiets' (bike). This place is actually a bike shop but they also rent bikes for around €10 per day, which is cheaper than other places in the city. The key to cycling in Amsterdam is to have a bit of assertiveness and never hesitate! Try and always double lock your bike to a bike rack to avoid the bike thieves!
