The popular café Sokkelund is located on Smallegade under black awnings. The atmosphere resembles that of a trendy, Parisian café, the menu is French – and then there’s the burger, which is legendary among both locals and experts. The sesame sprinkled bun is made from a brioche dough and the meat comes from the Danish farm Grambogaard – one of the burgers comes with aquick-fried steak tartare patty, which is a big hit. The burger – which you can actually eat with a knife and fork without it exploding – comes with a side of crispy, homemade French fries, aioli and Béarnaise sauce.Sokkelund takes its burger pretty seriously and sometimes they go on trips abroad to find inspiration on how to perfect the taste, ingredients and the cooking method to achieve the perfect combination.

Since 2007, burger restaurant Halifax has offered Copenhageners a gourmet alternative to fast-food burgers. It started on Frederiksborggade and has since then expanded into a chain of four restaurants (two in Inner City, one in Frederiksberg and one in Østerbro), but it all began in a basement on Frederiksborggade. The concept is the same at all four restaurants: You design your own burger menu in four easy steps. First, you pick a destination (there are nine different kinds of burgers named after and inspired by geographical locations around the world – the “Kreta” burger (Crete burger), for instance, contains tzatziki), then you pick a patty (beef, chicken, chickpea or celery), a side (fries, mashed potatoes, a salad or tortilla chips) and finally, you pick a dip. And that should leave you with a customized and incredibly delicious meal.

One of Vesterbro’s best cocktail bars is called Lidkoeb. The place can at times be very crowded and somewhat noisier than many other places, but it’s definitely worth a visit. Lidkoeb is located in a courtyard on Vesterbrogade 72b, right before the street splits into two streets, Vesterbrogade and Frederiksberg Allé. The three-storied bar is full of surprises for those who haven’t been there before. On the first and second floor, you’ll find Lidkoeb’s extensive cocktail menu, draft beer, and bottled beer. But you’ll find the biggest surprise on the third floor. Sloped walls, dim lighting and fancy furniture characterize the third floor, where you can enjoy a glass of whiskey – and whiskey only. The atmosphere is more relaxed and you’re not allowed to talk on the phone or take pictures. The third floor is only open on Fridays and Saturdays.

Copenhagen Zoo was founded in 1859 and has in recent years been undergoing considerable modernisation, e.g. a new Arctic facility. Before that, a new elephant house was designed by the English architect Sir Norman Foster. The Zoo includes the Tropical House, a large Children’s Zoo, an African savannah, and a South American pampas. The Zoo-tower offers a grand view of Frederiksberg. There are also several restaurants and kiosks as well as facilities for enjoying picnic lunches

This park is hidden gem. The garden was established in 1858 in the Romantic style of the day, strongly inspired by landscape gardens, and features a variety of garden and park spaces. There are lawns where blooms emerge from the grass, flowerbeds, a forest, a grove, a rockery and numerous open spaces. This is an enticing place to spend time in spring and summer, sitting on a bench or relaxing on one of the lawns. At the centre of the garden is a lake with an island, accessible via a small footbridge. The most famous spot is the rose garden, which features hundreds of varieties and is approached through an arbour topped with rambling roses. The rose and spice gardens give off an almost overwhelming array of wonderful scents. And almost everywhere you go in the garden, you hear ducks quacking away on the lake. At the back of the garden is the Væksthuset Café, set in an old greenhouse. The garden is a haven for sunbathers, readers and amateur botanists. Visitors tend to respect the peace and tranquillity by talking quietly and softly.

At the main entrance, visitors are officially received by Frederik VI, a former king much beloved by his people, so one is fully aware of entering his garden, where he used to be rowed about on the canals saluting his subjects. The statue's pedestal has the following inscription: 'Here he felt happy in the midst of loyal people'. These days, Svendsen's Boat Service (Svendsens Bådfart) will do the rowing for you. Boat tours operate all summer. The boat tour will give you a good idea of the vastness of the gardens. On the tour you will see the Frederiksberg Palace, towering on a hill top, many lovely little bridges, and the Chinese Pavilion that was erected in 1799 as a Royal teahouse. For centuries, the Frederiksberg Gardens has been a favourite outing spot for Copenhageners. Many bring their picnic baskets for lunch and top off the day by visiting the Copenhagen Zoo in the northernmost end of the gardens. For horticultural inspiration, visit the lovely gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society (Haveselskabets Have) at the main entrance. Access to the Chinese Teahouse Island: May to September, Sundays 2pm to 4pm.
