Sightseeing

This 10.5 acre park in the heart of the East Village (between 7th & 10th Streets and Avenue A &B) offers both New Yorkers and tourists a place to see something new every day. All year long there are performances, punk bands, The Drag Festival, Green Markets, the Dog Run, Sunbathers, and our resident Red Tail Hawks..just to name a few. The Park is abound by Scenic 9th St and of course St Marks Place, one of New York's famous streets. (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards made "Waiting for a Friend" Video here at 96-98 St Marks Place) There is a Bike Share Station on 10th St flanking the park. Opposite of this is the most picturesque spot in EV, showcasing beautiful brownstones, one of which is Mark Twain's former residence, and also known as "The Haunted House." On St Marks you'll find "Yoga to the People" and many restaurants and stores. Up and down 9th and 10th check out Flower Power, Pink Olive, and many cool resale shops. You'll also find Quintessence Vegan Restaurant (my fave), and 9th St Espresso (free wifi).

Considered a public park (Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street) but I would say The Highline is impossible to categorize. The Park is built on an elevated, out of use train tracks. It is 1.45 miles, (2.33km) and meant to be walked. There are several cafes, chairs, benches, tables, (even a fountain or two) along the way. The views are absolutely stunning and beautiful, (I love walking at sunset), Manhattans best architecture, and river views are breathtaking, and tranquil. There are several places to rest along the way, and many places to disembark and shop so you go at your own pace. The scenic walk is carefully designed to enhance and showcase the best of manhattans skylines and architecture, alongside sustainable plants and artistically designed landscapes. Check out: www.thehighline.org before you go so you can plan ahead.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Spanish name means "Love and Bitters" Ask the bartenders to suggest something for you, whether you are familiar with bitters or new to the concept. From the street this bar doesn't look like much, but once you are inside you'll quickly become a fan. The bar is known for the bitters. You will see all the many types in small bottles displayed throughout the bar). The drink recipes are invented by their bartenders. They even hold classes if you are interested. The environment feels like a General Store in the South, from another era. The owner has earned his stripes doing time in the best restaurants down south as well as TV food network. The bar gets full fast but you wont mind the crowds. The bartenders are friendly and the drinks speak for themselves.

A grocery store with the basics, and a very nice produce section. Less expensive than other markets in the neighborhood and decent quality.

I love this Nail Salon! It just opened up in my neighborhood (70 Avenue A) Its small - they have 3 pedicure chairs and about 4 manicure tables. The nail techs are excellent and they have about 100 nail colors to choose from. They do regular and gel, plus extensions, spa pedicures and other specialty services. (eyelash extensions - I haven't tried these yet) The nail art is outrageous. They do everything. There is a small section where they have many nail and spa products for sale too. I must say, they've raised the bar! Very friendly, personalized service. They went out of their way to accommodate me when I just walked in, so I recommend to make a reservation. The place is small and already gaining in popularity. (646--781-9987)

Yang TZE River Laundromat located at 324 E3rd Street (between Avenue C and D)This Laundromat is efficient and cheap! Kevin and his wife are excellent owners. You can do laundry yourself or drop if off and pick up later in the day or the next day. Prices are cheapest I have seen in the city. 324 E 3rd Street (212) 780-9230 If you are traveling a lot and need to wash your clothes and repack for the next destination, stop in here first. They also have an ATM inside.

Shopping

Famous Artists' district and now one of the best places to shop in NYC. Definitely touristy!! but so what!, you will find all the famous International brands. I love Santa Maria Novella on Lafayette St. It's an ancient Perfumery that was founded by Dominican Friars in Italy. They make perfumes, home fragrances, candles, incense and other cosmetic products. While in the area, I recommend having breakfast or brunch at "Jacks Wife Freda" also on Lafayette St. While in Soho, I recommend shopping for clothes at Rag & Bone on Mercer St. I really love this place because it really captures the essence of New York City. For jeans I like Adriano Goldschmied; the store's on Green Street. Have dinner at Cocotte on Prince & Spring. Make reservations early, but there is always a place at the bar. Soho is a fun place to shop, eat, hang out all day and into the night.

Parks & Nature

A few steps from Houston St in the East Village, this park runs along the East River. Its perfect for a morning run or bike ride, and even more beautiful at sunset. On summer weekends you'll find sunbathers and people watchers, families picnicking and others just hanging out, enjoying life.

Food Scene

Located in the Ludlow Hotel, I recommend stopping in for a drink while you're out in the Lower East Side. The restaurant is very trendy, and developed by famous restauranteurs known for creating an entire dining experience. The chef makes restyled French Classics. Try stopping in for drinks and check out the menu at the bar.

C&B Stands for "Coffee and Breakfast" A very small, way too under-hyped, eat in/take out place on 7th St. They make mostly Breakfast Sandwiches and Bowls with locally sourced ingredients. When I went there we ordered and payed at the counter, then walked over to Tompkins Sq Park, across the Street, and sat on a bench to eat. I loved doing this more than eating inside because I got to enjoy the morning outdoors. You should know the tables are hard to come by, because they don't take reservations. However, if you don't mind waiting, there is a bench outside and people are ok just standing around.... talking, hanging out while they wait. There is nothing over-filling or over complicated, so you really cant go wrong. (Egg sandwiches with fresh bread and brioche, cheese, thick bacon, chorizo, breakfast bowls with greens and shiitake mushrooms, for example) They take their coffee seriously. Mine was a pour over, and made by a perfectionist with locally roasted beans. Delicious!

Its nice traditional Italian food, which is about two blocks from my apartment. (2nd St bet Ave A and B) Its also nicely priced. Its a great place to go if you are just arriving from a long flight and you don't want to go far, or get stuck in a tourist trap. Its open late and you won't have to worry about a complicated menu; something for everybody, and everything is good. Its a fun atmosphere and always busy so you know everything is fresh. The crowd is New Yorkers and some international visitors. A nice mix. Its cash only so bring your cash! You can go the ATM at Duane Ready Pharmacy across the street on Avenue B and 2nd St, if you need cash. Also around the corner is Discovery Wine (Avenue B and 2nd street on the other side of the street).
