The Inside Guide sums it up nicely: "This hidden gin bar is where the insiders go, come sundown. Tucked neatly behind Honest Chocolate Café in the armpit of the Commune 1 Gallery, this dedicated gin bar, like its chocolately sibling, is all about quality rather than quantity."

A steep but relatively easy hike up a well-trodden path (under an hour for the fit), this route spirals up from the car park right to the top of Lion's Head, from where one has spectacular 306-degree views of the Atlantic seaboard, Cape Town and Table Mountain. Ideal for a picnic at the top. At full moon in warm weather, there is a constant stream of hikers with torches going to the top at night - when one looks up from the city, it looks like a string of jewels around the peak.

A steep climb, an hour up for the fit and 2 or more for those less so, this is a wonderful trek up to the Table Top. The path is all stepped and busy at peak times. A rewarding way to reach the top of Table Mountain and look over the splendour of Cape Town. At the top, there is a restaurant and bar. If you are tired, take the cable car down.

Cape Town’s inner city is abuzz with activity on the first Thursday of every month, when Capetonians (and visitors) wander through the various galleries and stores, which stay open until 9 pm, says http://insideguide.co.za/. To start off your evening, grab a map of the city at your first stop, which is any one of the participating galleries, so that you can plot out your route. Some of Insideguide's favourite participating shops and galleries include the City Bowl Market on Hope Street, the Book Lounge on Roeland Street, Michaelis Galleries at UCT’s Hiddingh Campus on Orange Street and Youngblood Gallery and Beautifull Food. Shopping

Africa's top tourist destination, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, is much more than a shopping mall. A working harbor, this expansive area has theaters, restaurants, night-clubs, five-star hotels, a huge Ferris wheel, a world-class aquarium, arts and crafts, cinemas and boat trips. The shopping includes world brands such as Zara, Hamleys, H&M and TopShop, as well us upmarket boutiques such as Louis Vuitton.

Getting Around

If you are coming from the USA, continental Europe or other places where you drive on the right-hand side of the road, in South Africa we drive on the left. This can be tricky if you are not used to it, especially when you get to traffic circles or need to react on reflex in an emergency.
