Tavira Island (Portuguese: Ilha de Tavira) is found South of the city and can only be reached by boat, which departs from the city center and from Quatro-Aguas. This is a long, narrow barrier island a few hundred metres off the city of Tavira. You can get there by boat, which leaves from the city’s marina and nearby Quatro Águas, or cross the bridge at Santa Luzia and catch a tourist train that runs in the summer. You’ll know why you made the crossing as soon as you arrive; the Blue Flag beaches on Tavira Island are out of this world, even by the high standards of the Algarve. They go on for 11 kilometres and have a wide strip of soft white sand bordered by dunes.

Take the the little ferry from Tavira to a beautiful white sand beach with a lot of space, restaurants, bars and snack huts. Shade rental available in peak season (often no charge in the off-season).

The closest beach by distance can only be accessed by river boat between Tavira old town and Ilha de Tavira for 2 euros a head which runs half hourly from March to October morning to night (although check times as if you get stranded you will have to way for a 15 euro water taxi home). Once there you will discover a self contained island with beaches on south side and a host of bars, restaurants and shops. High season these will remain open until late as there are residents in the form of holiday homes and campers, so keep an eye on the time as you will end up stranded. Can get busy high season but some lively terraced beach bars with live DJ sets make this fun for large groups.
