The Gates of Dawn is one of the most visited shrines in Vilnius that is famous in Lithuania and abroad. This is the only surviving gate of the first original five gates in the city wall that was built between 1503 and 1522. The painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Chapel of the Gates of Dawn is known all over the world.

It has also been known as the Medininkai Gate, as it led to the village Medininkai south of Vilnius, as well as Aštra broma. Of ten city gates, only the Gate of Dawn remains, while the others were destroyed by the order of the government at the end of the 18th century. You can get into the chapel over the gates through the church on your left hand if you are back to the old town and facing the gates
