See the rare Okarito kiwi, rowi. The centre is part of the species enhancement program where kiwi eggs are being incubated and the kiwi chicks protected from predation that occures in their natural habitat. The juveniles are released back to the wild once big enough to fend for themselves, usually at one year old.
