Arts & Culture

The Abbey was on the site long before Torquay existed. It grew into one of the country's richest religious orders before it fell foul of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. It then became home to a local wealthy family called The Carys until they ran out of money in 1930 and had to move out. Its last incarnation has therefore been as a home for the municipal art collection and as a museum. It has therefore reflected the changing political, economic and social changes of the country as a whole. It has a wonderful walled garden where there is an arid house and a palm house and where there is also an Agatha Christie inspired poison garden.
