The Gin Trap sits along side many other eateries on West Quay at Ahuriri. Its GOOD pub type food and is a primo spot to sit in the sun and enjoy an afternoon over a few refreashing G&Ts . With the Yacht club opisite the sunsets are lovely here. They serve lunch and dinner - NOT breakfast.

Its hard to pick a category for Birdwoods as it has something for every one. A beautiful sculpture garden for delightful stroll on a sunny day, an interesting gallery of art, collectables and jewelry, an old fashioned sweet shop and of course the fab cafe!! There ravioli is the best I have tasted anywhere in the world, great coffee and yummy sweet treats. Its on Middle Road about 7 minutes drive out of Havelock North, easy to get to and just allow plenty of time its easy to spend a good couple of hours here.

This is one of the original pieces of NZ Podocarp forests left in the area. The trees, including Kauri and Rimu are magnificent 100s of years old, surrouned by native flora and forna and well signed and named. This is a very easy flat walk on a well marked wide track. It is a bit of a drive about 50 mins but is stunning and filled with bird life. Take a picnic - large covered pinic tables are next to the parking area. For the more adventurous drive further and follow the signs to Mangatutu Hot Springs

Picnic table and shelter Toilets Getting there From Napier, follow Puketitiri Road for 40 km past Balls Clearing , then turn into Pakaututu Road. Follow this for 9 km then turn into Makahu Road and follow this for a further 10 km to the end. The trip involves about 1 hr of travel from Napier on some unsealed gravel roads, as well as a river ford on Makahu Road 7.5 km from the road end. Take care when driving through the ford as heavy rain and snow melt can affect the water level. The road is narrow, and may be slippery when wet. Check with Hastings District Council (external site) for temporary road closures. Makahu Road is not suitable for caravans or campervans.

This is a small but delightful beach about 35 mins north of Napier - well worth a picnic and a swim in crystal clear waters on a golden sand beach. Surf life saving club is on the beach December- January. With many other bush walks close by such as White Pine Bush, Shine Falls and Waipatiki Beach walk through Native niku palms ( entrance on the left just next door to the first Bach on the left ) you can really make a day of it.
