Traditional Devon pub and restaurant. We like to eat in the pub area-same food- less formal. Very tasty. Lovely atmosphere. Famous for its 'War Horse' link. Michael Morpurgo lives nearby. Village hall has a painting of the horse, commissioned by Michael after visitors kept asking villagers where the painting was ha ha

Parks & Nature

There are two large lakes and lots of trails to walk on. You can access this by car by driving out of the village southwards, passing through the little hamlet of Ash ( which is one mile out of the village) and about 100 yards further on there is a little parking area on the left. Or you can walk there by going to the top of the drive and turning left down the stone track. After about 300 yards you will come to a track off to the left. Go down this track and ove the bridge. This is the Tarka Trail. Turn right and the nature reserve is 50 yds further on. Dogs are allowed on leads.

Sandymouth sits along a stretch of coast between Bude and Morwenstow, one of Cornwall's wild and dramatic corners with a character all of its own. With a dramatic backdrop of sheer cliffs dating back millions of years, and a pebble ridge at the top of the beach with sand exposed as the tide recedes, Sandymouth is popular amongst surfers and rock-poolers alike.

Arts & Culture

And it's a cafe too. There was a famous battle here between Cromwell's army and the King's army under General Faifax. Cromwell slept at the pub called The Black Horse in the centre of town. People dress in period costume and show you how they would have lived in those days-fascinating! They also teach you how to load muskets- sometimes.

This is a half hour drive and takes you right onto Dartmoor. The nine maidens stone circle is situated a short walk away on the moor. The legend is that they were seen dancing on a Sunday and so were turned into stone but each Sunday at 1pm they dance again. There's also an old village stocks in Belstone itself.

This place has fantastic views over Dartmoor and as well as the stone circle has a bronze age village and two bronze age bridges nearby. Go to Chagford for tea or lunch after and have a look around. The bird cage (cosy and small) has good food. So has the Old Forge Caffé (tea room)and restaurant and the Green Man Cafe and Cakes (casual. Good for kids).
