This is the first place that I ate in Chapel Hill! It has a very fun brewery feel with indoor and outdoor seating so that you can sit looking over the edge onto all of the happenings on Franklin Street while you eat.

I had to visit this spot right away because anyone that I knew from Chapel Hill said that their BLT is a must-try. They’re right. You pick how many stacks high you want and everything is fresh. They were still in their Covid protocol of ordering when I was there so the whole market wasn’t open but I’ll update you the next time I make it back!

While this is in Durham, it’s a really fun place to eat. The inside of the restaurant has sports playing on tvs in the whole place. If the weather is nice, you can even sit on the back patio and watch live sports if the Bulls are in town. Elevated bar food with all of the classics.

For a unique dessert experience, visit this fun ice cream shop. Located on a cute downtown Durham street, you pick a flavor core, dip, and toppings. Trust me, it’s harder than it sounds because the possible combinations are endless.

This deli was highly recommended to me as a Chapel Hill staple and it does not disappoint. Pair your favorite dish with your choice of salads and sides from the massive display case. You’ll want to go back and try them all.

My favorite happy hour spots

This is a perfect spot for craft cocktails. They do not serve food here, but it has quickly become a favorite spot for a pre-dinner happy hour!

Breakfast and brunch favorites

This historic Chapel Hill staple is a perfect spot to visit for breakfast. Classic breakfast staples with a southern flare right on Franklin Street. The lunch, dinner, and cocktail menu looked great too, but I haven’t yet made it back to try them out.

Yea, I know. This is a chain restaurant and we had one in Charlottesville, so it’s hardly new. BUT, it’s right around the corner, reliable, and delicious so just has to be included as a favorite breakfast spot.

A must-do Chapel Hill breakfast. Fresh made biscuits with your choice of fixings. I recommend the fried chicken.

City/town information

Carrboro is just on the west side of Chapel Hill and has its own unique energy. There are a lot of restored warehouses turned restaurants, markets, and mural lined streets. Worth a walk through. If you go on Wednesday or Saturday in the summer they also have a farmers’ market!

Just immediately to the east of Chapel Hill is Durham NC which has even more restaurant and exploring options. Check out a Durham Bulls game or eat at Tobacco Road next door. If you visit Duke, just don’t tell the people at UNC that I sent you!

Hiking and city walks

Not far from Merritt’s grill is a short paved walking trail that leads to a big open field. You can leave the paved portion of the path and circle the meadow or venture off on a series of connected trails. Highly recommend the AllTrails app if you want to explore.

Just a few miles away there is a great trail system within the Duke Forest. Scenic with hills and a rocky stream. There are even a couple of rock scrambles which are not hard and make it more interesting. Parking along the road for the Whitfield trail heads. Dogs on leashes welcome.

UNC women’s soccer has a great story involving their history of helping to establish women’s college sports as a force. And they are just fun to watch.
