A TRIP TO RAMSGATE IS NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT A VISIT TO THE WAFFLE HOUSE Established in 1957, this historic South Coast landmark is nestled in the tranquil sub-tropical edge of the Ramsgate Lagoon. Once you’ve tasted our unique waffles, finish your visit with a leisurely walk across the quaint wooden bridge to the beautiful Ramsgate beach for a swim or a laze on the sand. Dating back to 1957, the birth of the Waffle House in Ramsgate, South Africa, heralded the beginning of an exciting journey for John and Doreen Gaze. Opening the restaurant of their dreams, known at that time as the Tea House of the Blue Lagoon, they had no idea it would become the famous South Coast landmark that it is today. After a 15 year period during which John and Doreen leased out the premises, they took it back in 1991 and renamed it The Waffle House. This was in line with the two Waffle House restaurants their eldest son had opened in the UK. The first was in Norwich, Norfolk opened in 1978, and the second was in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Today, the Waffle House is one of the busiest restaurants on the South Coast, specialising in good food and good service. This 220 seater restaurant is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. Holiday seasons are particularly busy however we consistently rise to the challenge of producing and serving quality products throughout the year.

Pistols Saloon’ in Ramsgate is a family friendly restaurant and wild west-themed pub and the pub also boasts an awesome Wild West Museum. “Donkey” the donkey is one of the favourite patrons and a regular face at the bar. She drinks Coke (from the can), eats carrots and is pampered by all the other patrons. This family bar and museum on Old National Road, Ramsgate is definitely not your usual hang-out.  They are also pet friendly. There’s a Wild West Museum next door to the bar, with lots of cowboy memorabilia and information about Indians and the Most Wanted criminals of that era, including Billy the Kid and Jesse James. There’s a lot to see and explore for the kids as well as a selection of arcade style games. For the adults there are the regular music shows (naturally including country music) and a real Western bar, complete with an old piano. In Pistols Saloon every detail is remembered and has appeared in many newspapers, magazines and Pasella a local Afrikaans Lifestyle TV show, even the bathrooms are designated to Cowboys and Cowgirls. When you walk through the swinging doors a sign against the wall warns you that this is a family establishment and that swearing won’t be tolerated. For every swearword you must pay a fine of R2 and this money is donated to the SPCA.

About Butterfly Valley On the east coast of South Africa, neighbouring Margate, is the KwaZulu-Natal village of Ramsgate. While it is popular for its gorgeous beaches during the summer holidays, the town is also home to the Ramsgate Butterfly Valley, where an enormous variety of butterflies can be enjoyed within a natural, accessible environment. Because most of the butterflies of Ramsgate are bred on the local farm (as opposed to being imported, like many similar tourist attractions), visitors are able to see the entire life cycle of these intriguing insects. Ramsgate Butterfly Valley specialises in a plethora of indigenous South African butterfly species. This involves protecting them within a natural environment, educating the public about them and allowing visitors to experience being a part of the butterflies’ home in a very special, hands-on way. There is a flight dome, which allows visitors to amble around freely, with the at-home butterflies flitting around and perching nearby. Because these creatures know that they are safe in these surrounds, they often allow the guests to come very close to them, enjoying every detail on the colourful wings and their fascinating antics. The Life Cycle Tour educates visitors about the stages that take place, from pupa to butterfly and everything in-between. The breeding centre is an informative resource at which visitors can learn about the butterflies and the host plants on which they survive. In addition to the butterflies, there are other creatures that can be found here; including the Australian spiny leaf insect, emperor scorpion and bearded dragon. Such diversity and educational facilities mean that Ramsgate Butterfly Valley makes for a great family outing or a school visit.
