Sightseeing in Normandy

There are an abundance of Châteaux, Museums and pretty towns to be discovered. Aswell as the famous Bayeux Tapestry, the Bell Foundery and exciting Amusement parks and a Zoo for the children - there are so many lovely things to see and do in Normandy.
Our closest town, 6 km away. Château des Matignon is situated at the centre of Torigni-sur-Vire. This 16th century Château, belonged for over 300 years to the Matignon family (descendants of William the Conqueror). The Madame requested that the high wall along the east side of the lake was built, as she didn't like taking her walks around the lake in the wind! Torigni-sur-vire is a busy little town where you'll find all the shops, fuel station, bank etc that you need. The walk around the large lake is very picturesque and pretty. Pedalos are for hire too. An outdoor market is held on Monday mornings (finished by approx 12-1pm) Selling fresh local produce: vegetables & fruit, honey & cheeses, fish & meat as well as clothes and plants.

The photos just speak for themselves! Mont Saint Michel is a stunning and charming Medieval Monastery. Parking is a distance from the mount so a shuttle bus (included in the parking fee) leaves every 20 minutes and takes you to the mount. Highly recommended and a place you must visit whilst staying in Normandy.

Clécy is a place of natural beauty on the Swiss Normand, very scenic and with the river Orne flowing through it. You can hire kayaks and canoes or just stroll down the riverside, take a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery. For the more sporty people, there is a short Via Ferrata adventure trail climbing section to try, which is fun to do, as well as a Zip Wire ride and sports climbing routes on the rockface. The village is 45 minutes away by car. There is a good Restaurant on the Riverside and delicious ice-cream shops too.

The charming little town of Villedieu-les-Poêles is delightful, with its water fountain and church in the centre. The famous Bell Foundry is situated in Villedieu les poêles, it dates back 400 years. Commissioned bells made in the Foundry are sent all over the world. Guided tours are held daily around the Foundry. Very interesting and well worth a visit. The main street has lots of French character with it's bars and shops specialising in copper pans. There's a great market too on a Tuesday morning.

Just a lovely place to potter about the streets, and have a delicious meal in the Brasserie in front of the Cathedral. Lovely organ recitals are held in the Cathedral occasionally.

Falaise is a lovely little town in the neighbouring county of Calvados, in the region of Normandy. The Château de Falaise; a visit to this spectacular médiéval castle would be the highlight of your day. Great for older children too as the story from room to room is told through a hand held tablet. It is a solid stone fortress that dates back to the 12th-13th century. The famous William the Conqueror was born here. It is positioned above the town on a rocky outcrop and can be seen from every approach road to the town. The castle is open everyday from 10 - 7pm Falaise is a bustling little town, with bars, shops and restaurants. An open market is held in the central square once a week selling all the local produce. Falaise is a favourite of mine as I lived there for 2 years.

A wonderful moated 12th century castle, that is definitely worth a visit. Restored this century from a ruin, this castle offers lovely views from the roof and towers, and the old building steps you back in time, giving you a real idea of what it was like to live there in days gone by. Great day out if it's raining. About 50 minutes away.

A very interesting little Château that is still being discovered and restored by the local community. There's a walk-through display of pictures and information in one of the outbuildings - telling it's story from centuries ago. The entrance charge relies solely on the generous contribution of the visitors. Lovely buildings and interesting facts about the moat and ancient French gardens that were situated behind the Château centuries ago. Close to Coutances about 45 minutes away.

This tiny little chapelle is perched 323 meters on a rocky outcrop above the little town of Mortain. Stunning views can be had from the look-out point across the countryside for many kilometers. On a clear day Mont Saint Michel can be seen. 'Hill 314' originally a German military look-out point in 1944 is to be found a 5 min walk away. Today it is a place to remember the many fallen soldiers, who died for their freedom. A memorial monument has been built just before the Chapelle.

A beautiful 17th century Château in lovely grounds. It houses a small Hot Air Balloon Museum which is informative and very interesting. Especially as it was the Malcolm Forbes who flew the balloon across North America, and who later bought the Château Ballleroy. Some family members still live there today. Well worth a visit. Open Sunday - Saturday 10.45 - 6pm
