Sightseeing

West Bay is one of two main public beaches on the island... West Bay is about 45 minutes to an hour from French Harbour, depending on traffic, and offers a stunning white sand beach lined with resorts and restaurants. A highly touristed spot on the island, I like to describe it as the Roatan equivalent of Cancun. It's a great place to snorkel from the shore or catch a glass bottom boat tour. Day passes for most resorts can be purchased if you'd like access to lounge chairs or a pool. There's a public parking lot behind Infinity Bay Resort (their private parking lot is on the right, public on the left), and you can walk right through their lobby and courtyard out to the beach.

One of my favorite places in the world, Camp Bay is one of two main public beaches in Roatan. It's a bit of a drive (an hour from French Harbour, much of it on unpaved roads), but well worth it! Unlike West Bay (which is highly touristed), Camp Bay is quite remote and secluded, so it's uncommon to find a lot of other people there, except on Sundays. There can be a bit of a surf, and the reef is further offshore, so don't plan to snorkel, but it's an incredible place to swim in crystal clear water or sit under a seagrape tree and look out over the azure horizon. If you're feeling hungry, La Sirena restaurant is a tiny hut on stilts over the water just a short drive past the public beach... it's a bit rustic, but they have a good local menu (including delicious rum punch and fresh seafood dishes), plus a view to die for.

If you're looking for a unique cultural experience, head over to Oak Ridge and take a mangrove tour... your boat ride will take you in front of several local fishing communities lined with candy-colored houses before going through the picturesque mangrove canal. After the mangroves, have your boat driver take you to On the Rocks, a boat-access only waterfront restaurant for some yummy island eats and a cold beer. Full disclosure: the restaurant is owned by my brother-in-law and run by my nephew (so this is a bit of a personal plug), but it's a great little spot. Another brother-in-law also does mangrove tours in his boat, so let me know if you'd like me to set that up for you. You’ll want to wear your swimsuits, as he’ll stop to let you have a quick dip in “the creek”, a little turquoise lagoon near the end of the mangrove canal. The cost is $15 per person for the standard tour, and $25 if you'd like him to take you to a snorkel spot as well.

The oldest settlement in Roatan, and the first Garifuna settlement in the Americas, Punta Gorda has a rich history and culture which is unique from the rest of the island. Sunday afternoons are a great time to visit this community, as it becomes lively with punta dancing and traditional drumming. You’ll also have the chance to savor authentic dishes like Machuca, a seafood soup with coconut milk and mashed plantains at restaurants like Perla Del Mar.

Located at all BIP gas stations, RTB (formerly Circle K) is an easy option to stock up on drinks, ice, and snacks. At some locations (including the one by the entrance of French Cay community), there's a tall freezer near the entrance which is stocked by Roatan Provision with high quality imported frozen meats. I typically supplement my groceries from Eldon's with a stop here to grab a few things like USDA beef burger patties, steaks, sausages, etc.

If you'd like to purchase seafood to prepare, please avoid buying from local fishermen selling from their boats, as their catch is likely a result of poaching, and these practices are unsustainable for our reef. Litrico's in Coxen Hole is a reputable seller of quality (and legally-caught) seafood.

Consejos para la ciudad

Rent a car or hire a driver to get around the island

Most of our guests will opt to rent a vehicle for the duration of their stay, in order to have the flexibility to explore the island. There are a number of rental companies (including several international agencies like AVIS) at the airport, and I recommend reserving your vehicle in advance of your arrival. Alternatively, if you'd prefer not to rent, I'll connect you with an island concierge who can assist with arranging transportation for you.

Currency & Credit Cards

If you're coming from abroad, don't bother bringing Lempiras (our local currency) with you... US dollars are accepted everywhere, and you'll pick up Lemps along the way as change. Credit cards are accepted at many businesses, but some don't take them, so it's a good idea to have some cash with you. ATMs are also available at the banks at Mega Plaza mall so you can take out cash in Lemps if you need to.

Address for arrival forms

We don't have street addresses here like you might be accustomed to elsewhere; houses aren't numbered and many roads aren't even named. For your arrival forms, under address, simply indicate: [House Name], [Community Name] Roatan, Bay Islands Honduras

Safety

Like anywhere else in the world, there’s some crime here, but Roatan is generally a very safe place. In all the years I’ve lived here I’ve never been in a situation where I felt my safety was at risk. That said, the little crime we do have is generally crime of opportunity, so it’s not wise to leave valuables unattended in public places (i.e. don’t leave your fancy iPhone sitting on a bar). Other than that, it’s just common sense stuff that you would follow anywhere (i.e. you probably wouldn’t be hanging out in dark alleys at home, so there’s no good reason to do it here either).
Costumbres y cultura

Little "friends" on a Caribbean island

Part of life here is the presence of lots of little critters. Among other things, we have geckos that live inside and outside (you may hear them chirping), and there are bugs. Of course we do have pest control measures in place, but you may still come across some "friends" (usually tiny ants) inside or outside your rental, as they're attracted to water and food. There are also sandflies ("noseeums"/midges), which are found everywhere on the island, especially at dawn and dusk. I recommend being proactive with repellant (natural or deet-based) when outdoors, as they can leave an itchy bite.
Costumbres y cultura

Weather

Roatan's climate is generally sunny and beautiful, with prevailing easterly trade winds and very little temperature fluctuation throughout the year. From February through September, daily highs range from 84°F (29°C) to 90°F (32°C). Our rainy season runs from about mid-October through late January, with highs averaging around 83°F (28°C) and lows around 77°F (25°C). Even in rainy season, we get a good mix of rain and sunshine; some days have lots of rain, some have lots of sun, but most have a bit of both.

Language

Most native Roatan Islanders are bilingual, having learned Spanish in school. but raised with the local Creole English dialect at home (many islanders -- especially the younger generations -- will “tone down” their Creole to make their English understandable for foreigners). That said, some of the population speaks Spanish exclusively, so knowing a few phrases (or having a translation app on your phone) can help!

Driving Safety

Our island roads require a different skillset than you may be accustomed to. I encourage you to drive defensively, as you can expect the following: - winding roads with blind curves - potholes, dirt roads, road construction - congestion, especially in and around Coxen Hole, and especially on cruise ship days - vehicles passing you, including motorcycles passing on either side - cows, horses, or dogs in the street - pedestrians crossing the street anywhere - taxis stopping abruptly to pick up or drop off passengers - police checkpoints (usually checking for valid licenses and registrations)
Costumbres y cultura

Tipping

While many local families are supported by tourism, wages are low, so I’d encourage you to be generous, and have cash handy for tips. Just like in North America, tipping is customary in restaurants, with 10% for standard service, 15% for good service, and 20% for outstanding service. An automatic gratuity of 10% is sometimes added (look for “Servicio” or “Propina” on your bill), though most restaurants are now moving away from this. For activities, 10-15% of the cost of the activity is customary.
