We are very close to Battle and Battle Abbey, built by William the Conqueror in 1066 as a penance for all the bloodshed at the earlier battle between the Normans and Saxons. A visit here is a must for any visitor who enjoys history. It's fun to stand under a speaker to hear Norman French, then move across to another speaker to hear Anglo-Saxon.

Hastings is our nearest town and has many shops, an interesting Old Town, with lots of cafes, unique shops and amusements. It has a fishing fleet, which sells some of its catch directly from the boats. There is an art gallery and museums, worth a visit.

A medieval hilltop town, surrounded by a wall, with a castle. Lots of history here, especially about smuggling and the Mermaid Inn is reputed to have a ghost. On the wall of this hotel you can see part of a Rudyard Kipling poem about the smugglers.
