Delicious food using local produce. Much from its own beautiful walled garden. Most, if not all is organic and the views to the Mendips are a delight.

Very good newly refurbished restaurant pub. While the location next to the A38 is not the best, the food is delicious. Usually best to book to avoid disappointment. 5 minutes away by car.

What’s the story? This 17th-century coaching inn in sleepy Lower Langford on the doorstep of the Mendips had been a favourite country retreat for city dwellers from Bristol for years, but it had descended into sticky-carpeted, black-beamed and brass-fitting design hell by 2019, so Butcombe, the brewer and hotelier, decided to close it for a top-to-toe renovation. It turned out to be perfect timing: the hotel was completed in May, just as most Covid restrictions were lifted. What do we like? As we pull up to the sturdy red-stone building at the edge of a village of cute cottages and country lanes, a couple of cyclists are hugging pints in the garden, stretching out their Lycra-covered limbs in the late-afternoon sunshine. Once we pass into the bar, however, the vibe turns pleasingly urban. The open-plan room is decorated in soothing slate blues and heritage greens. There is a glamorous section with low armchairs upholstered in flamboyant fabrics, leather banquettes and eclectic artwork that’s perfect for a predinner cocktail. It sashays through to a casual deli-style space, with high counter tables that overlook the open kitchen and the pretty, plant-filled courtyard, where stone archways have been transformed into cosy nooks. Booking required.

30 minutes drive to an exciting city full of activities and places of interest. The Harbourside is well worth visiting with lots of eateries and walks along the river. Wapping Wharf is worth visiting with newly developed cargo container units selling lots of different foods and drinks. Interesting historical places all around the city and a visit to Clifton is a must.
