Sightseeing

is a short walk from the main A858 near Shawbost next to Loch Roinavat is a renovated pair of thatched buildings used in past times to process barley grain into meal. The Corn Mill and kiln were in use right up till the 1930’s, showing its useful location The Norse Mill and Kiln buildings give a very rare glimpse into the Scandinavian past of Lewis. The mill was powered by water from the stream from the nearby Loch Roinavat. The Mill and Kiln was restored and re built in the late 1960’s and worked on again in 1995 by the same expert stone mason that renovated the Bostah Beach house The path to the Mill is good and well maintained, as are the buildings.

Set on the exposed north coast of the Isle of Lewis the next stop is Iceland. This secluded section of the coast takes the full brunt of the Atlantic swells. The beach is made of a good stretch of golden sand flanked by rugged cliffs. At the north eastern end of the beach are a couple of sea stacks which are a favourite with photographers. It is great for families but the sea has strong currents and huge waves in windy weather so swimming is only possible in gentle weather and care should be taken at all times. It is immensely popular with surfers ang has been described as the best surfing beach in Europe!

Gearrannan Blackhouse Village offers cottage accommodation, historical activities, and many fantastic walking, cycling and fishing opportunities. This coastal crofting village is situated in a secluded bay within the district of Carloway, on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Since 1989 the local community trust Urras nan Gearrannan (the Garenin Trust) has been painstakingly restoring the once derelict properties and croft land to recreate an authentic settlement offering visitors modern facilities within the surroundings of times gone by.
