Sightseeing

St Michaels Mount is worth a visit and close by, check the tide times as at low tides you can usually walk across the famous Causeway, there’s also a fab play park next yo the field car park in Marazion. When the tide is high there is a boat service to and from the island. The walk up to the castle is short but fairly steep and uneven in places, worthwhile when you get there though as the views are amazing and the walk-through the historic castle is very interesting. Keep an eye out for any electrical fittings which were installed by me! Lord & Lady St Levan still live in the east wing of the castle which remains private. Locals tip – there is a Sunday service in the church which is part of the castle, you can attend the service and get to visit the castle for free. (The island is closed to visitors on a Saturday)

The Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The theatre is at Porthcurno, 4 miles from ands End. The season runs each year from May to September and the booking system is online. Be sure to take a picnic with you to eat during the interval, we usually take wine and a pasty! It can get Chilly in the evening so a blanket for your legs is welcome and remember to pack a waterproof jacket in case the inevitable happens. Food, snacks and drinks are also available to purchase at the Minack. LOCALS TIP - arrive an hour early and stroll down to Porthcurno Beach, the views are unreal, albeit it is very busy during the peak season.

Don’t forget the trendy St Ives! St Ives sits on the opposite north coast and has amazing beaches, gift shops, Galleries (including the Tate) and restaurants. There is lots to do here for everyone! If you want to guarantee a table at a restaurant then please be sure to book ahead of your visit. LOCALS TIP - I recommend catching the train from Penzance or St Erth, the train usually stops and Carbis Bay and if you’re feeling fit you can walk approximately 30 minutes into St Ives from Carbis Bay and take in the absolutely stunning views, these views are also available from the train.

Outdoor Swimming

This is the jewel in the crown of Penzance promenade, the U.K.’s biggest and most celebrated art deco seawater Lido which originally opened in 1935, one of only a handful of surviving Lidos in the UK which now boasts a geothermally heated pool. LOCALS TIP – if the tide is low then the battery rocks surrounding the pool are great fun for children to go crabbing and rock pooling, always take care when you’re near to the sea and be aware of the tide times.

Activities

Whether it’s a fishing trip or just a wildlife Safari pleasure cruise, you can hop on a boat in Penzance harbour, these trips start from this little as 2 hours. LOCALS TIP - On a sunny day we often take a crap baguette and a bottle of bubbly on board for the afternoon pleasure cruise to Porthcurno & never tire of Adrians commentary.

Food scene

Walk through the south facing, dramatic, exotic, subtropical landscape and be sure to visit the Observatory at the top of the hill which is spectacular when the sky is blue. TSG sits in the middle of what local farmers called the Golden mile due to the past high success of crop farming there. A gallery has been added to the site more recently which is also excellent. LOCALS TIP - Tie your trip in with lunch at the Tremenheere kitchen and you will definitely not be disappointed (my favourite place for lunch)

Beach

Whether you will be just soaking up the Sun or taking surfing lessons, you’ll definitely enjoy a fantastic day on Sennen beach, as with all Cornish beaches please take note of local lifeguard signage and beach flags. There are great rock pools at one end of the beach offering hours of fun especially for the young ones. You can also call in to see the Sennen lifeboat in the life boat station at the far end of the beach. The beach is huge at low tide but on spring high tides the sea takes up most of the sand to be sure to set up camp at the top of the beach if you don’t want to have to relocate at high tide. The Sun sets on this coast and this is a great vantage point to watch it go down. LOCALS TIP - arrive early during peak season to ensure parking close to the beach there is a larger car park at the top of the hill but be warned the hill is a steep!
