Le Guide ai Quartieri

You are really in the heart of Florence and just below the apartment you can find everything you need! Via della Spada which ends in Via Tornabuoni (the famous luxury shopping street of Florence) is the street of your apartment. It was a main road in Florence in ancient times: it started from the door of the nearby church of San Pancrazio in the Medieval wall and headed to the city of Pistoia! The street, as well as hosting the MARINO MARINI MUSEUM with the contemporary artworks of the artist-sculptor of the 20th century, is full of different kind of places. From antique stores and ceramics shops to clothing boutiques. The famous MIO CONCEPT STORE is located in this street, there you can discover the artworks of Florentine street artists such as BLUB, ACHE77 (whose painting you will see at home, they are all unique pieces) and KLET, but also handmade jewellery, original gadgets and sustainable gifts. In Via della Spada you will be spoiled for choices between delicatessens, grocery stores and bakeries. It’s plenty of places where you can enjoy a good TYPICAL TUSCAN SANDWICH, takeaway a good lunch or sit comfortably in some of the most famous and typical restaurants of Florentine cuisine like the very famous "RISTORANTE LA SPADA" and "DA MARIONE" (last one doesn’t accept reservations). They are open every day for lunch and dinner. Let Lavinia know if you want to reserve a table for you in one of these traditional osterias! :)

From your apartment main door turn left twice and you’ll be in another characteristic street of the historic center of Florence: Via del Moro. CURIOSITY: at the intersection of Via del Moro with Via della Spada you can spot at the top of a house facade, a tiny railed window called “finestrella” (small window) placed right below a large window. Its purpose was to give kids the opportunity to look down the road without the danger of falling. More of this typical children’s window can be found around the city. Via del Moro it’s a pretty narrow street dotted with the most beautiful antique shops and it’s the place where street artists love to leave their marks with their fascinating urban art. MY SELECTION OF PLACES YOU CAN’T MISS OUT ON THIS STREET: -L’OSTERIA DI GIOVANNI: The best Florentine steak in Florence is cooked by Giovanni! This tavern, surrounded by a vaulted cellar, immerses you in a typical environment of italianism and conviviality peculiar of Florentine people. It offers the most traditional and genuine Tuscan cuisine in an elegant setting, this is the reason why it is very popular between locals. Giovanni is open every day for dinner. LAVINIA WILL BE HAPPY TO BOOK A TABLE AT GIOVANNI’S FOR YOU! :) -IL TAMARINO STAMPE D’ARTE (art print shop): this place is much more than a print shop. It is a proper gallery full of unique and original artworks, perfect place if you want to bring back home a special gift from the city of Florence. You can find both affordable items and truly sought-after pieces made in their workshop. They make prints using “acquaforte” (etching), an ancient printing technique presumably originated in Florence in the first half of the 16th century. Take home one of Piero’s prints and you will have a unique souvenir and memory of the city. -HUNTER VINTAGE FIRENZE and MY MOTHER IS A BIKER: These two Made in Italy clothing shops represent the innovative creativity of Florentine craftsman. Both shops, unique in their kind, are visited every day by people from all over the world. You cannot go back home without a fancy hat from Mattia’s boutique or a vintage jacket from Tommaso’s store!

SAN LORENZO BASILICA: the only unfinished basilica, the oldest in Florence. It has been renovated several times since the sixteenth century by the Medici family. MEDICEAN CHAPELS: access is gained from the back of the basilica and it contains the private cemetery of the Medici family. Here, among others, you can find the Chapel of the Princes by Buontalenti and the New Sacristy done by Michelangelo. In the first one, particularly beautiful for the precious marbles and inlays that decorate the walls (on which you see the coats of arms of the Tuscan cities loyal to the family), is buried Cosimo I together with various relatives. The second one is commissioned to Michelangelo to host the tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo De Medici. Here the artist, before leaving definitively Florence to move to Rome, completed some of his most beautiful sculptures: "The allegories of time", the portraits of the "Dukes", the "Madonna and Child" and the statues of Saints Cosma and Damian.

PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA AND PALAZZO VECCHIO: Piazza della Signoria is the seat of civil power and the heart of the city’s social life. The square hosts the Loggia dei Lanzi (so called because here the Lanzichenecchi camped in 1527), which was used to host many official ceremonies of the Florentine Republic; here we can see many sculptures including marble lions, Perseus by Benvenuto Cellini, the Rape of the Sabine, Patroclus and Menelaus, Hercules, the centaur Nessus by Giambologna and much more. In the square you can see also the buildings of the Tribunale della Mercanzia, Uguccioni Palace, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I De Medici and the famous fountain of Neptune. PALAZZO VECCHIO is the heart of the civil power; it is a wonderful examples of 14th century civil architecture, surmounted by the majestic tower of Arnolfo. The palace today still houses several municipal offices (including the first citizen’s office) while the remaining rooms are used as museums open to the public, such as the splendid Salone del Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred).

PORCELLINO FOUNTAIN: Few steps away from Signoria square, exactly in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, you can see one of the most popular monuments in Florence: the bronze subject, which is actually a wild boar, is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic marble statue that Pope Pius IV gave to Cosimo I De Medici in 1560 during his visit to Rome. According to our popular tradition, touching the boar's nose will bring good luck! The complete procedure to obtain a good omen would be to put a coin in the animal’s mouth after rubbing its nose: if the coin falls beyond the grate it will bring good luck, otherwise, it won’t.

PITTI PALACE AND BOBOLI GARDEN: Pitti Palace still bears the name of its first owner, the Florentine banker Luca Pitti who, in the middle of the 15th century, built the palace probably based on Brunelleschi’s design. It has been a grand-ducal palace and symbol of the consolidated power of the Medici family and it has seen the succession of three dynasties. Purchased in 1550 by Cosimo I de Medici and his wife Eleonora di Toledo, it passed to the Habsburg-Lorraine successors in 1737 and then to the Savoys who lived there as the royal family of Italy since 1865. It is currently home to 4 museums: the treasure of the Grand Dukes on the first floor, the Palatine Gallery and the Imperial and Royal Apartments on the main floor, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Fashion and Costume on the second floor.

THE BOBOLI GARDEN: Behind Palazzo Pitti there is the wonderful Boboli Garden. The Medici were the first to take care of the arrangement, creating the model of the Italian garden that became an example for many European courts. PONTE VECCHIO: It’s the ancient bridge that crosses the river Arno at its narrowest point. It is a national artistic heritage, one of the most famous bridges in the world and certainly one of the most beautiful! The bridge took the name "vecchio" (old) being the oldest Florentine bridge when the "nuovo" (new) Carraia bridge was built. It is the only bridge to have been spared by the retreating of the German troops in 1944 and to have survived the most disastrous events of all kinds, including the well-known flood of 1966. Ponte Vecchio, at first the bridge of butchers and vegetable sellers, is today dotted with the most beautiful jewelry stores and famous historic Florentine goldsmiths studios. The Vasari Corridor, built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565, passes over the goldsmiths' stores: it was commissioned by the Medici family to allow them to move secretly from Palazzo Vecchio to their summer residence, Palazzo Pitti.

SANTA CROCE BASILICA: in the homonymous square, it is the largest Franciscan church in the world and a prestigious symbol of Florence. It was the place of the greatest artists, theologians, religious, men of letters, humanists and politicians who determined the identity of the city. The basilica is considered the Pantheon of the illustrious Italians: it holds countless graves including that of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Galileo Galilei, Ugo Foscolo and Gioacchino Rossi (remember: Dante Alighieri's tomb is in Ravenna, Emila Romagna, the city where he died in 1321).

THE ACCADEMIA GALLERY: The Gallery opens its door in 1784 when the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo reorganised the Academy of the Arts of Drawing (founded in 1563 by Cosimo I De Medici) into the modern Academy of Fine Arts. The decisive event in the history of the museum was the transfer of Michelangelo’s sculpture, David, to the gallery from Piazza della Signoria in 1873. The statue, symbol of Florence is still in the Gallery today together with a large collection of pictorial masterpieces, sculptures and musical instruments! DAVID, the supreme example of beauty, is more than 4 metres high and 6 tons in weight, Michelangelo took three years to finish it: from 1501 to 1504. PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO AND SAN MINIATO AL MONTE: From up there Florence looks like a postcard! You cannot leave Florence without having been on this wonderful panoramic terrace that allows you to have a breathtaking view of the city! The Piazzale, created by the architect Giuseppe Poggi in 1869 and dedicated to the great artist Michelangelo, presents the bronze copies of some of his famous works preserved in Florence: the David and the four allegories of the Medici Chapels of San Lorenzo. (If you need to reach the Piazzale by bus, I suggest you to take the line 12 or 13 that passes by the central station of Santa Maria Novella. The journey takes about half an hour). SAN MINIATO AL MONTE BASILICA: it is located few steps away from Piazzale Michelangelo, in an even higher place of the city. San Miniato was the first martyr of the city: he was probably a Greek merchant or an Armenian prince in pilgrimage to Rome. He arrived to Florence around 250 AD. He lived the life of a hermit and he was beheaded during the anti-Christian persecutions of Emperor Decius. After his execution he walked away holding his own head in his hands and arrived to the current basilica that became his resting place. Adjacent to the church today, in addition to the monastery, is the monumental cemetery called "Delle Porte Sante”, buried here you will find Carlo Lorenzini (Collodi), Vasco Pratolini, Pellegrino Artusi, many painters such as Ottone Rosai, Luca Alinari, Pietro Annigoni, but also the movie director Franco Zeffirelli, the founder of the Florentine children's hospital Giovanni Meyer, the founder of the café in Piazza della Repubblica Stanislao Paszkowski, and many others.

DANTE'S HOUSE MUSEUM: Dante's House Museum is located in one of the oldest parts of the historical center of Florence, in Via Santa Margherita (the church of Santa Margherita de Cerchi is the place where Dante met Beatrice for the first time) and actually, it is not inside the original Alighieri's house but it incorporates other buildings, such as the Giuochi's tower (Giuochi's family were Dante's neighbours). The real houses of the Alighieri family were apparently on the right side of Castagna Tower but today there are no traces of their medieval appearance. ZONE OLTRARNO AND PIAZZA SANTO SPIRITO: “DILADDARNO” or “OLTRARNO” (“on the other side of the Arno”) as Florentines say, is the whole area of Florence located on the left bank of the Arno River. This area of the city, an integral part of the historic center (in fact it includes the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens), includes the famous districts of San Frediano, Santo Spirito, Borgo San Jacopo and Porta Romana. Also in this part of the city there are many monuments and examples of religious architecture: the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the Brancacci Chapel, the church of San Felice in Piazza, the church of San Frediano in Cestello, the church of San Jacopo Soprarno, the church of Santa Maria del Carmine and many more. You will also find examples of military architecture in the only sections of Renaissance city walls still intact and in the fortified gates: Porta Romana, Porta San Frediano, Porta San Giorgio, Porta San Miniato, Porta San Niccolò. THE BASILICA OF SANTO SPIRITO: in the homonymous square, it is one of the most suggestive points of Florence; it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and has always been, since its establishment, ruled by the monks of Sant’Agostino order. Inside there are works of the most famous Florentine artists like the wooden crucifix of the young Michelangelo. The square is often the location of numerous events or fairs, first of all the famous antique and crafts market that takes place (usually) every second Sunday of the month, excluding the months of July and August.

-TRAMWAY STOP: 5 minutes walking distance, right in Piazza dell’Unità, there is the last stop of the city center tramway (LINE T2). This line passes through Santa Maria Novella station and goes directly to Peretola airport! Ticket fee is 1.50 euros and you can buy it at the special machines located next to every stops (or in any tobacco shops). -BY CAR: ATTENTION! The apartment is located in a traffic limited area and you can not enter some time of the day and may get you a fine! ANTINORI IN CHIANTI CLASSICO

If you're a wine lover, you can't miss the opportunity to visit LA CANTINA (winery) par excellence! It is about 30 minutes driving from Florence. MY SUGGESTION: I recommend that you take the classic tour, which consists of learning about the history of the Antinori family, understanding how the wine is made, and exploring the winery with its innovative architecture. The experience ends in the heart of the museum area (which houses the family's private collection) with a wine tasting of three representative products from the Antinori estates in a stunning glass room.
