Waddesdon Manor was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild between 1874 and 1885 to display his collection of arts and to entertain the fashionable world. Opened to the public in 1959, Waddesdon Manor is managed by the Rothschild Foundation, a family charitable trust, on behalf of the National Trust, who took over ownership in 1957. It’s home to the Rothschild Collections of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts. The Manor is surrounded by the privately-owned estate. Successive generations of the Rothschild family have made their mark on the landscape, from Baron Ferdinand and Miss Alice’s extensive planting and landscaping, to James de Rothschild’s golf course and Stud, which still thrives today. More recently, Lord Rothschild and his daughter Beth have recreated major features, such as the Millenium Avenue of trees linking the Manor with Upper Winchendon. As a family, the Rothschilds were the greatest collectors of the 19th century, seeking the highest quality of workmanship and with a keen sense of historical importance. The houses that they built, the interiors they created and the magnificent Rothschild collections within them became known internationally as the ‘goût Rothschild’. Waddesdon is one of the rare survivors of that splendour. Baron Ferdinand created his garden for the amusement of his guests, who spent an entire morning on their tour. Waddesdon had one of the most important Victorian gardens. Many of the key features have been restored and can be enjoyed by today's visitors. The Grounds are open Wed-Sun, 10am-5pm.The House is open Wed-Sun, 11am-4pm (last entry 2.30pm). Grounds, House, Wine Cellars, Coach House Gallery, Aviary, Woodland Playground, Power House, Gift & Wine shop, Manor Restaurant, and food-to-go open. Please note that Waddesdon is not part of the hot drink offer for members.

City/town information

Oxford is a beautiful city of stunning architecture, history and culture. You’ll find ancient and modern colleges, fascinating museums and galleries, and plenty of parks, gardens and green spaces in which to relax. Plus, the city centre is small enough to cover on foot, and only a few minutes walk from the main rail and coach stations. It’s absolutely packed to the brim with interesting things to do and see, and the summer is a particularly good time to visit and enjoy its beautiful architecture, leafy parks and museums. Oxford has numerous major tourist attractions, many belonging to the university and colleges. As well as several famous institutions, the town centre is home to Carfax Tower and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, both of which offer views over the spires of the city. Many tourists shop at the historic Covered Market. In the summer punting on the Thames/Isis and the Cherwell is popular. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of the most famous and prestigious higher education institutions of the world, averaging five applications to every available place, and attracting 40% of its academic staff and 15% of undergraduates from overseas. As well as being a major draw for tourists (9.1 million in 2008, similar in 2009), Oxford city centre has many shops, several theatres and an ice rink. The historic buildings make this location a popular target for film and TV crews. The University of Oxford maintains the largest university library system in the UK, and, with over 11 million volumes housed on 120 miles (190 km) of shelving, the Bodleian group is the second-largest library in the UK, after the British Library. Oxford is home to many museums, galleries, and collections, most of which are free of admission charges and are major tourist attractions. The majority are departments of the University of Oxford.

Thame is a thriving market town, perfectly situated at the foot of the Chiltern Hills, just 14 miles from Oxford. From historical buildings to beautiful parks, the Thame Museum, The Players Theatre, a vibrant High Street, and regular events – Thame has lots of exciting attractions and activities for all the family. Like many traditional market towns, Thame grew from Anglo-Saxon roots but has since developed its own individual character whilst preserving its rich history. Ancient medieval buildings stand alongside Georgian and Victorian architecture and the iconic boat-shaped high street stands as testimony to the marketplace for which it was originally designed. The beauty of the town offers a quintessentially English experience and is the reason that Thame is one of the most frequently used filming locations for the popular ITV series, Midsomer Murders. Although Thame is a ‘historic’ market town, there is nothing historic about our markets which continue to thrive today with regular markets throughout the year. Regular Arts and Craft fairs are also hosted in the Town Hall. True to its tradition as a market centre, the streets of Thame are also home to a whole variety of fantastic independent and well-known shops, eateries & pubs. There is always something going on in Thame’s buzzing events calendar. This includes a Country Show at Easter; Music Festivals in May and July; a vibrant Carnival and Fete in June; Towersey Music Festival in August; a Horse & Country Show, a Food Festival and a Street Fun Fair in September; an Arts & Literature Festival in October, and of course our fun-filled Christmas Lights Switch-on. For visitors and locals alike, a friendly and helpful team are on hand in the Town Hall Information Centre to provide you with all the latest information about the town and surrounding area. Whether your interests are in walking, cycling, history, or Midsomer Murders, there’s an abundance of trails available in and around Thame. To help you explore, leaflets are available from the Information Centre or download them from www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/visit-thame.

Golf

World renowned course architect Rees Jones designed The Oxfordshire's Championship golf course, which was his first in the U.K. He gave the course 135 bunkers and 4 unmissable lakes. With strategically-contoured holes that blend effortlessly into the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside, Jones's masterpiece is a links style course which is a challenge for all golfers of any ability. Some of the games greats have teed it up here in competition, with Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke included. With such pedigree it is no wonder that The Oxfordshire is by far one of the best courses within the BB&O. They never use temporary greens, and the course plays it's full length through the winter
