Local towns & villages

Within 5 minutes walk from the house, you will find yourself in Tetbury town centre, where you’ll find a Co-Operative Food, well-equipped for basic groceries and supplies. For something a little special, Highgrove Shop is also on the high street of the town, selling a selection of luxury organic foods and homeware inspired by Prince Charles’ nearby Highgrove Estate. Markets are held in the town centre every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am – 3pm. Once one of the most prosperous wool towns in the country, Tetbury still remains a lively and popular hub of Cotswold commerce and appreciation. The central feature of the town is the Market House, built in 1655 when Tetbury was at the height of its wool trade, and designed for the sale of wool and yarn. To honour its past, every year on the last Bank Holiday Monday of May, Tetbury Woolsack Races are held, an age-old tradition that dates back to the 17th Century. The idea of wool sack racing was born from drovers who would run up a steep hill with a very heavy sack of wool in a bid to impress the local ladies! Men’s sacks weigh 60lb while women’s way 35lb, and they must carry their sack above their head as they run the 240-yard course up and down Gumstool Hill, past the old weaver’s cottages, as part of a relay. Although it’s free admission, with plenty of stalls, amusements and a fabulous street fayre, this event has raised a lot of money for charity in the past and is always hosted by a guest celebrity – watch this space! Tetbury is also home to Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s country home and primary residence, Highgrove Estate. Although not open to the public, garden tours can be booked in advance online as well as numerous other events that take place at the stunning royal residence throughout the year.
