Another short drive and you will find Zims Hot Springs. It is a natural hot springs that has been plumbed into a swimming pool. While the pool is not 5-star quality - if you have the right mind-set it can be a really fun visit and the drive is pretty.

Sightseeing

The old spiral highway is rarely used by cars except for residence. The top is a beautiful place to rest and get a panoramic view of the city. If you are a fitness fanatic you could run or cycle up.

Hells gate state park has a beach for summer lounging (although sometimes it is quite busy), a lot of trails for hiking/running/mountain biking, a boat marina to launch from, or an interpretive center if you would like to learn about the history of the area. It costs $7 to enter the state park (Last time I went) but you can access the trails for free from Tammany Creek Road. From their website: The Nez Perce National Historic Park is just a short drive from Hells Gate, with fascinating displays of artifacts and a glimpse of the traditional life of the Nez Perce people. The Jack O’Conner Hunting Heritage and Education Center displays the hunting trophies of outdoor writer and conservationist Jack O’Connor and tells the story of American’s hunting heritage.

The levee trail is one of my favorite places to walk. You can find benches all along the path. Locals usually run or walk the "bridge loop" across the Blue Bridge to Lewiston, south to the Bryden Canyon Bridge, then north again - all along the levee path. Both sides are generally safe although the Lewiston side is better lit for evening/night walks.

"Since time immemorial, the valleys, prairies, mountains, and plateaus of the inland northwest have been home to the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people. Extremely resilient, they survived the settling of the United States and adapted to a changed world. Nez Perce National Historical Park consists of 38 places important to the history and culture of the Nimiipuu. Explore these places. Learn their stories."

A hidden treasure - a beautiful (but windy) drive up the HWY 12 river road, into the Bitterroot Mountains. This hot springs is about 1/4 mile hike from the parking spot. There is not much warning for the pull-out so be safe when pulling off the road. This hot spring is fun to visit in the summer or winter - it is fairly popular so visit during the middle of the week if you don't want to share.

If you make the drive to visit Weir Hotsprings, stop at Lochsa Lodge on your way home for a cup of cocoa or a bite to eat. They have cozy affordable cabins and in the summer you can walk down to the river to cool off. This is one of our favorite places.

Pottery made from the ash of the Mt. St Helens eruption. The owner of this store is a kind (brilliant) gentleman who makes incredible pottery. You can buy pottery here or take a mini lesson for just $10.00. It lasts about 15 minutes and includes instruction, materials an firing of one pot. Call for an impromptu session on short notice if the desire and time are right for you. Hours Monday—Friday: 11:00AM–5:00PM Saturday: 11:00AM–3:00PM
