Beaches

These are our family favorite beaches! I took all of these photos with my phone and it does not do it justice on just how breathtaking these beaches are!!!
'Anaeho'omalu Beach or "A-bay" is steps away from Hale Keala and across from the Kings' Shop. Great calm beach for kids and romantic sunset views.

This is a family favorite beach! It's about a 10 minute drive away from Hale Keala. The water can be calm, but at the same time it has big enough waves for boogie boarding. Lots of white sand, lifeguards, bathroom facilities, outdoor showers, pavilions and parking.

If you have little ones, this beach park is ideal! It’s about 17 min drive from Hale Keala. This beach is always calm, protected in this cove area and is very shallow. There is parking, outdoor/indoor showers and bathrooms. It's also next to a historical heiau which is where ancient Hawaiians lived and you can take a tour of the grounds before going to the beach.

One of THE BEST ideal places to visit! We love going to Kiholo Bay. It’s heading back towards Kona about 10 mins from Hale Keala. Parking is along the busy highway and then about a half mile walk along a paved trail to the bay. From there you can find a private cove all along the bay with turtles casually swimming by. Make sure to take plenty of water and a hat as shade is limited. These photos were taken with my phone and no filter was necessary! Absolutely picturesque!

Another family favorite of a beautiful white sandy beach at Mauna Kea. It’s about a 15 min drive from Hale Keala. Parking is limited to beach access so it’s a hit or miss if it’s open, but there’s outdoor showers and bathrooms and a little bit of a hill to walk from parking to the beach.

This is one of those places that takes you on an old Hawaiian historical journey before you get to the beach. It’s a 5 min drive from Hale Keala. There’s Lots of ponds filled with fishes before you get to the Bay. The bay has some nice snorkeling nearby, bathrooms, outdoor showers and shade. We love going here!

This is a short 10 min drive from Hale Keala. There are so many lava rock tide pools all along the bay. Parking is along the road near any of the Shoreline Access points or down towards the end of the dead end road is a good place with shade. Not much sand, usually has turtles swimming around and good snorkeling.

I’ve lived on 3 Hawaii islands that have famous shave ice vendors and this is by far my favorite shave ice place! The best part about staying at Hale Keala! It’s Family owned and operated and the best part is that it’s only steps away!

Sightseeing

This is a fairly easy hike into the beautiful Pololu Valley which is about an hour drive from Hale Keala. Black sand beach, parking is slim, the waves can be rough if it’s a really windy day, but you can find little tide pools of water to play in.

This is a place we always take friends and family to see. It’s breathtaking and only an hour away from Hale Keala! The parking is along the road and the hike is not an easy one, but once you reach the bottom it’s amazing! Black sand beach with ample shade. Take lots of water and food because you will want to stay and soak it all in when you’re down there.

This is a must-see! It’s an hour and a half drive from Hale Keala and a Super easy trail to the waterfall with parking and bathrooms at the beginning. Beautiful scenery everywhere you look! This would be an easy stop to make on your way to Hilo side.

This zoo is a lot of fun and best part is it’s free! They do accept donations and we always try to give a little something when we go. It’s a little less than an hour and a half drive from Hale Keala. There’s a nice variety of different animals and there’s also a playground inside. On certain days/times they also have a petting zoo.
