Some of my favourite places to return to include these :
Bruny Island is a truly serene, spectacularly rugged and olde world "nature at its best" environment. It is only an hour away from Hobart including the ferry ride. In all weather, I highly recommend this sanctuary island.

Mt Wellington is a short half hour drive from Hobart. In wet and icy conditions it could take longer. The views are worth the wind and chill that you might encounter however, I can promise that you will return from the Mountain feeling alive.

Just ten minute drive from the glasshouse or a ferry ride on the Derwent River, Mona is a big tourist draw card because it rotates its gallery and experiences regularly and is an architectural masterpiece amidst some of Hobart's best real estate.

Just a twenty minute walk or a five minute drive. Always worth a visit, including the "succulent cafe" that makes the BEST vegie burgers I have ever had.

This part of Tasmania has sensational beaches, green rolling hills, fern forests, and antique shops and collectables at nearby historic Franklin. The Tahune air walk is not far by car and visitors can walk between the giant forest trees at a decent height. Recent bushfires makes this place especially appealing as it is the re growth that kindles hope for a green and sustainable future.

Port Arthur describes Tasmania's convict history better than any other site in Tasmania, and if travelling back in time to the olden days is a secret wish, then Port Arthur is the perfect place to immerse yourself in history, culture, society and the occassional ghostly inhabitants.

Bonorong has the usual Wallabies, possums, Koalas and Tassie Devils and bird life to show case but it also provides a fun bus tour where zebras chase you, camels throw their heads into your arms, emu's try to outrun the bus, where a white lion lounges in paradise and ALL the animals look happy to be there. Its not like other zoos.

One of the most spectacular waterfalls I have experienced in Tasmania is Russell Falls. Its only an hour or more from Hobart regions and easy family friendly walks that can be undertaken at any time of the year. After a rainfall in particular the reserve here becomes sparkling with sounds sights and smells and feels like an enchanted forest. Trust me, its beautiful and worth the entry Parks cost.

Salamanca is an : arts and crafts, people meeting people, good food and wine , cultural experience by the historic waterfront. The setting is second to none in my opinion and I doubt any other capital city could boast such a comprehensive market because the historic background is so unique. The market is not only nestled alongside the Old Wharf but adjacent and wrapped within a cobblestoned street of original colonial buildings where Hobart was born. To add to this vibrant heritage market scene , sits the majestic Mt Wellington overlooking her charges. There's something for everyone at this market. Its fun, its delicious, its entertaining and memorable.

The Octopus Tree and Sphinx Rock are significant areas of Wellington Park located on Mt Wellington. The Rock is a spectacular outcrop over looking Hobart town and rivers, with access through forests and winding tree fern tracks. The Octopus tree is fascinating as tree roots have encased boulders in its tentacle grip.

Cornelian Bay is our local water haven. Its just a few mins drive or a fifteen minute walk downhill towards the water front. There is a gentle walk to a lookout beyond the cemetry, a restaurant called the Boat House, an iconic walk past the classic boatsheds towards the bridge and city, a fabulous playground for children, and picnic areas for families. Watching the yachts bobbing on their moorings surrounded by the hilly green slopes of the Domain and listening to the cries of the seagulls is spellbinding in any kind of weather.

North Hobart, in particular Elizabeth Street, is the FOOD and WINE SCENE in Hobart and its just a ten maybe fifteen minute walk away. There is also a gorgeous State Cinema which offers roof top movies in Summer and is sure to please everyone with its film selection.

MY TOP Favourite Place if you only have a day or so.....

A Place that has it all in Tasmania. A glasshouse guest who was in Tasmania for just the weekend once asked me where they should go to experience something of Tasmania. Knowing that I had to be very selective I chose this place to recommend. An area that showcases Tasmania's natural rolling hills beauty as you drive along winding country roads lined with autumnal trees. A place where you can still drive on the oldest working stone bridge in the southern hemisphere and visit the oldest Catholic Church. A place where there are markets and communities gathering. A place of fine foods, and award winning wineries. A treasure trove place of skilled Tasmanian artisans of wood craft and glassblowing. A place where there are streetscapes that look like they have been taken from olden days story books. And a place of peace and simple living. And this place ? is just a fifteen or twenty minute drive from Hobart? And its even on the way to the airport and a Tasmanian wildlife park where you will find the Devil itself. The perfect place for a weekend visit to Tasmania.
Richmond is a valuable example of a colonial town just 20 mins west of Hobart. There are wineries and craft shops, bakeries and coffee shops. The main attraction of Richmond is the oldest sandstone working bridge in Australia as well as being home to the oldest Catholic Church in Australia. Its a must see historic destination and a lovely country drive .

Food scene

Salamanca Square and Battery Point is where Hobart as we know it today, began. The land upon which it sits is reclaimed once being the docking port of the tall ships from England. Battery Point is a classic heritage area of 19th century whalers cottages and Victorian cottages that perch alongside the waters edge. The Salamca market is perhaps the most well known of all Australian markets show casing artisans wares, boutique gifts and food services every Saturday.

Trying to find an Aurora?

Travellers staying in Hobart have asked me what the best way to find an aurora is. There is a certain amount of complex science involved and a certain amount of simple luck. Having a very dark, cloudless and moonless night is important and generally looking towards a southerly horizon away from city or traffic lights. If you can somehow organise this type of perfect weather situation then clarify with our local guru Margaret and her FB page which might give some of the science advice needed before you head out blindly into the wilderness. Search Aurora Australis and you will find it.
