The building is a five-nave basilica, built in 313 - 323, in which the relics of the holy great martyr Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, are kept. The church houses some of the best examples of mosaic religious painting.[1] Since 1988, it has been among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the Early Christian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki.[2][3] The crypt of the church is a museum.
