Diocletian's Palace is an ancient palace built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD. While it is referred to as a "palace" because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress. Today the remains of the palace are part of the historic core of Split, which, in 1979 were listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Sites.

At the westernmost point of Salona, in the Urbs occidentalis, in the second half of the second century A.D. under the influence of Flavian architectural style a monumental building was erected. It is one of the most recognizable buildings of Roman architecture. The remains of Roman amphitheatre indicate that gladiator fights were held in the city of Salona just as in any part of Roman empire, until the fifth century when they were finally banned. Only parts of substructures of this monumental building, as well as some fragments of architectural decoration and stone sculpture have been preserved. The amphitheatre was most severely damaged during the wars against the Turks in the 17th century when Venetians had it demolished for strategic reasons.

Split Summer Festival (1954...) is an art festival building its national and international reputation ever since the mid 20th century. Next to the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, it is a festival with the longest and shiniest tradition of the classical spectrum of performing arts (opera, drama, ballet, concert...), spreading in time the array of events: from Jazz concerts and film festivals, to exhibitions, performances and street theatre. The most persistent and the strongest organisation of the festival is the Croatian National Theatre in Split, the national theatre representing a crucial key venue in the cultural life of Split, and the vital point of the theatre life of Croatia as a whole.
