Niagara on the Lake - Pubs
Although the Town of Niagara on the Lake is well known for the Shaw Festival, and the World famous wineries......there are also some great new breweries that have opened in recent years, along with some of the best Pubs in Canada.
We invite you to visit some of these places and dive into the rich history of NOTL
One of our favourite places in NOTL. This old pub has great food, and a great atmosphere......but best of all, the history!
The Inn was burned down in the war of 1812, and rebuilt in 1814, and hosted many historical figures in Canada.
However, the most intriguing part of this history, is the Captain Swayze. Below is the excerpt from the Olde Angel Inn website;
There is a popular local legend (that shows up in accounts dating to the 1820's) of an unfortunate Canadian militia officer who was killed at the Inn during the American invasion of May, 1813.
Captain Colin Swayze had delayed joining the British retreat in order to rendezvous with a young woman, believed to be his true love. Surprised by American soldiers sent to search the Inn, he hid in an empty barrel in the cellar. The invaders used bayonets to prod into every corner and possible place of concealment and the unlucky lover received a fatal wound.
Some believe the Ghost of Captain Swayze is fated to walk the Inn at night, perhaps in longing for his sweetheart. There have been reports of noises coming from the empty(?) dining room, rearranged place settings, and other unexplained occurrences.
It is said that his ghost will remain harmless as long as the British flag flies over the Inn, a precaution prudently taken by the proprietor.

245 King StThe Irish Harp is a very fun place to visit during your stay in NOTL. Take a break from the site seeing and shopping on the main strip, and pop around the corner on King Street (across from the Prince of Wales Hotel).
With cold beer, great food and live entertainment some nights, the Irish Pub is a favourite of locals.
The Moffat Inn is another cool pub. However, being owned by the Vintage Hotels group, ensures that the food at the Pub is top class!
Check their web-site, as many times throughout the year they have daily specials that are absolutely amazing!

The Exchange Brewery is fairly new to NOTL, and located on the main strip (Queen Street).
Since opening, the locals have raved about the beer. We highly recommend visiting the Exchange for a sample of their "made on-site" beer.

If you are in the mood for just some great pizza and wings, or to watch a sports game, head over to Butlers Bar and Grill on Mary St.
The food is great, atmosphere is fun, and service is always good, which makes it a wonderful place to bring the whole family.
