From the Fishbourne Pond, behind the Bull's Head Pub, stroll along the shore (a flat, 45-minute walk) to the Crown & Anchor for lunch. Combined with a morning at the Roman Palace, this is a great itinerary for one of your days in the area.

Beautiful, unspoilt beach with dunes and shallow water for a long way out. It's essential to book your parking in advance, or you'll be turned away and parking in the village is nigh on impossible!

The raising of the Mary Rose is a pretty remarkable story, and it's well told in this fascinating exhibit about this ship - one of the earliest examples of a sailing warship - and Henry VIII's favourite in his fleet. You can also visit the Victory, Lord Admiral Nelson's vessel, and the Warrior, the world's first iron-clad warship. None of these ships are involved in any warring anymore, but their stories are really very special. Check out https://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/

We love this seaside pub. They have real ales, a good selection of wine and very fresh fish. If you're going to eat inside, call ahead (well ahead if you can) and book a table in the bay window.

City/town information

Chichester has something for everyone, really, from history buffs to high street shoppers, real ale enthusiasts to fine wine lovers. The Cathedral is beautiful. Among its treasures are a Chagall window, the tomb monument of Richard Fitzalan (and accompanying poem by Philip Larkin) and a section of Roman mosaic floor (the original monastery, built in 681, was itself built on Roman ruins).
