It is a lovely drive from the CH to Batemans. Once you get there through the country lanes you will love the gardens and really pretty courtyard for a light lunch or cup of tea. It is great for children as it feels safe and manageable. The house is fantastic and Kipling's desk feels like he has just left it for a stroll in the park. You can make your way through Battle and visit the Abbey if you have some energy left visit another lovely garden at Pashley Manor .

Yes it is fun for grown up and children, Battle is lovely and a little old-fashioned but much nicer for it. It has a great bookshop and a hardware store. A good veg shop if you need to pick up something on your way back.

The most lovely village. Lots of nice independent shops, nice places to eat and drink. Do visit the church and there is a lovely walk you can take just behind the church by the river.

My favourite book shop. Ask for recommendations, they are always spot on. Go upstairs to the second-hand section, you will always find a treasure.

You must visit this little piece of heaven. The murals are lovely and the whole setting is just enchanting. I love to seat on one of the benches looking at the fields. It is healing.

Book it! There is so much to learn. You get dazzled by the paintings and the bohemian story, but whatever your interests are (yes, theory of social economy too) you will find something for you. Lots of events too.

Walk up and down and get lost in the fields nearby. You can take many walks from here The church is wonderful and the pub a little brash sometimes but wonderful for a pint in the afternoon. Lunch is delicious too. Easy and fun.

LOCAL OUTINGS Outings for nature lovers There are some lovely local walks, so just ask us if you’re interested. Walk left out of the house down the lane to the woods off Gingers Green, or head right down Chilsham Lane and do a loop via fields and woods up to the 30,000-tree Greenway Fruit Farm, where you can buy whatever’s in season at a stall back on Stunts Green. We’re on the edge of the wooded High Weald AONB and a walk or bike ride to the sleepy but stunning Pevensey Levels, with Herstmonceux Church offering panoramic views to the South Downs. There’s a beautiful walk circling the world’s first brick-built castle at Herstmonceux, and you can pop into the neighbouring Observatory Science Centre, with its interactive science and huge telescope (the area is world-famous for its night skies because of very low light pollution). The Sussex Downs offer innumerable walks – check out the South Downs website for more information.

I love this place with little ones. It is never too crowded, and it feels manageable and fun. In summer, the water fountains are super fun.

Food scene

This is a lovely spot for lunch. If you love gardens, you will love this one. It feels intimate and grand at the same time. The ladies who serve the lunch are all wonderful, and the homemade cakes are delicious. It is just a lovely stop.

I love this pub because if it is a lovely day and Alfriston is busy, you will find a place here. And is on your way to the church Berwick church. A pint before facing God is always a good idea. The landlady is very kind and always friendly.
