When travelling on the beach road, your vehicle must be 4wd.
Once you leave the paved Hwy 12 and enter the Beach Road, you are entering a 4wd area only. AWD vehicles will likely not be able to drive through the soft sand areas.

Bring your groceries & supplies before you arrive.
Once you get to the rental home, you will not be close to any grocery stores, gas stations, etc. There is a Harris Teeter & Food Lion in Corolla before you leave the paved road. Make sure you plan accordingly for supplies prior to arriving.

Going sight-seeing to find the local wild mustangs is a must
During the off-season, you're more likely to find the wild horses on the roads where the homes are located. When the weather is warmer, you'll see them roaming closer to the ocean. Remember, never intentionally get close to the horses and do not feed them. Feeding or attempting to touch the horses can result in hefty fines, ticketing, & can even result in death to the animal. These locals are meant to be admired from afar!
