Walking around the Historic Center

You will be staying right on the heart of Lisbon. Baixa is one of the oldest neighborhoods. For years this was the main door to the city, with boats arriving at Cais das Colunas bringing all the goods from abroad. After the big earthquake of 1755 the whole area was reconstructed with a plan that would bring up order and grandiosity to the capital. The plan was supervised by Marques de Pombal one of the big figures of our city’s history. Streets that once were dark and narrow would now be perfect and symmetric with enough space to bring all the light and sparkle. You’ll find a lot of interesting places around the neighborhood, but here are the ones I think you can’t miss!
Praça do Comércio is historically known as the Door to our city. Many years ago, it was here that the boats arrived to bring all the discoveries from other parts of the world. Although there’s not many activities to do here, it’s imperative to pass by and embrace that magnitude. On one side you will be facing the Rua Augusta Arch and on the other side, the river. I strongly advise you to visit it at the sunset, you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the sun touching the river with the 25 de Abril bridge on the background.

This is one of the most iconic monuments and the oldest church we have in Lisbon. Built in 1147, after the conquest of the city to the moors, the cathedral has survived the big earthquake of 1755. it was renovated several times and is now a mixture of different architectural phases. It’s worth googling the name to see how it looked just a few years ago.
