Day Trips on the West Coast

Sightseeing

One of our favourite places to visit as this recreation reserve has three freshwater lakes. Plenty to do, swimming, boating, kayaking as well as walking or biking on tracks around the lakes. The main lake is a perfect swimming place for young children as there is a shallow stretch of warm water. Be sure to take an umbrella or a shade tent with you so you can make the most of this beautiful place.

Trounson Kauri Park is a 586 hectare mainland reserve under the care of The Department of Conservation. A short drive of 17 km from the Airbnb will have you wandering through the easy 1.6km loop track where many beautiful Kauri stand. A great walk for children. The park is home to a good population of North Island Brown Kiwi. We recommend visiting the park at night to hear kiwi calling and even see them.

Omapere is just a 1 hour drive from the Airbnb. As you descend down upon this little township your eyes will be taking in the massive golden sands across from the Hokianga Harbour. On a sunny clear day you will be stopping to take photos. Pick up some local smoke fish at Hoki Smoki. Stop at the wharf and have a look at the boats coming and going.

Tane Mahuta "Lord of the Forest" the largest living Kauri tree is just 35 minutes drive north on State Highway 12 in the Waipoua Forest. Park your car and in less than a minute you will be standing next the forest giant. There are other great walks in this area.
